NVIDIA said a production anomaly left fewer ROPs than specified in fewer than 0.5% of GeForce RTX 5090/5090D and RTX 5070 Ti GPUs. It reported an average 4% graphics-performance impact, with no impact on AI or compute workloads, and said the anomaly had been corrected. Owners can check the reported ROP count with GPU-Z and contact the card’s board manufacturer if it is below the model’s desktop specification.
What NVIDIA said about the missing ROPs
In a statement reported by TechPowerUp on February 22, 2025, NVIDIA said fewer than 0.5% of RTX 5090/5090D and RTX 5070 Ti GPUs were affected. Those units had “one fewer ROP” than specified. NVIDIA described the issue as a production anomaly; it did not disclose a specific silicon failure mechanism. The company said, “The production anomaly has been corrected.” TechPowerUp’s report
Here, “one fewer ROP” refers to one hardware partition, equivalent to eight of the ROPs commonly counted in product specifications. That is why the practical check is whether the reported total is eight below the model’s expected count—not whether a monitoring tool displays a count that is one lower.
NVIDIA’s statement was reported to put the average graphics-performance impact at 4%. That is an average, not a promised loss for every game or application: the effect depends on how much a workload relies on ROP throughput. NVIDIA said AI and compute workloads were unaffected. TechPowerUp’s report

Which cards to check and what count to expect
NVIDIA Support’s desktop specifications, updated May 13, 2025, list these ROP counts: NVIDIA’s ROP-check instructions and specifications
| Desktop GPU | Expected ROP count |
|---|---|
| GeForce RTX 5090 / RTX 5090D | 176 |
| GeForce RTX 5080 | 112 |
| GeForce RTX 5070 Ti | 96 |
The first NVIDIA statement named the RTX 5090/5090D and RTX 5070 Ti. TechPowerUp later reported a separate NVIDIA statement that an early production build of RTX 5080 GPUs was also affected. That later report does not mean every RTX 5080 was affected; NVIDIA’s support page gives a count to check but does not identify all RTX 5080 batches as defective. TechPowerUp’s later RTX 5080 report

These desktop thresholds do not apply to laptop GPUs. NVIDIA lists separate laptop counts: RTX 5090 Laptop GPU, 112; RTX 5080 Laptop GPU, 96; and RTX 5070 Ti Laptop GPU, 80. Check the laptop model against the laptop specification rather than the desktop table. NVIDIA Support
How to check a GPU’s ROP count with GPU-Z
- Download the latest version of GPU-Z from its publisher.
- Run GPU-Z on the computer with the card you want to check.
- Find the “ROPs/TMUs” field and compare the ROP count with the correct model in NVIDIA’s specifications above.
NVIDIA recommends a third-party hardware monitoring tool such as GPU-Z and gives these steps on its support page. NVIDIA’s checking instructions

- 3.6-slot design with massive fin array optimized for airflow from three Axial-tech fans
- Phase-change GPU thermal pad helps ensure optimal thermal performance and longevity, outlasting traditional thermal paste for graphics cards under heavy loads
Make sure you are checking the exact GPU and the right device type. A laptop GPU has different expected counts, and a system with more than one graphics adapter can make it easy to inspect the wrong one.
What to do if the count is short
If the reported count is below the specification for the exact model—for example, 168 rather than 176 on a desktop RTX 5090—save a screenshot of the GPU-Z reading and contact the card’s board manufacturer through its support or warranty channel. NVIDIA’s reported direction for affected owners is to contact the board manufacturer for a replacement. Replacement timing, stock, eligibility, and warranty terms depend on the manufacturer and are not specified universally. TechPowerUp’s report

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteWhat a missing ROP can mean for performance
ROP units process pixel data, including blending, antialiasing, render-to-texture work, and writing final pixel values to the frame buffer. Losing a partition can therefore affect graphics workloads differently depending on how ROP-intensive they are. TechPowerUp’s examples show that results vary across games and tests, so neither NVIDIA’s 4% average nor any one benchmark should be treated as a guaranteed result for an individual card.
