Fastboot (also called bootloader) mode is a device-level maintenance interface, and the button sequence for entering it varies by phone model. To leave it safely, choose the normal Start or reboot option on the phone, or run fastboot reboot from a connected computer. You do not need to unlock the bootloader or flash software just to restart normally.
How do I enter Fastboot mode?
There are two common routes: send a command from a computer using Android Debug Bridge (ADB), or use the phone’s hardware buttons. The ADB route requires Android to be running well enough to accept commands and an established ADB connection. The button route depends on the exact model and working buttons.

Enter with ADB
- Install Android Platform-Tools on the computer if needed. It includes
adbandfastboot; Google lists the latest tools through Android Studio SDK Manager,sdkmanager, and direct downloads for Windows, Mac, and Linux at Android SDK Platform-Tools. - Connect the phone using a data-capable cable or another supported ADB transport, and confirm the computer recognizes it through ADB.
- In a terminal or command prompt, run
adb reboot bootloader. Google lists this as a way to enter bootloader mode in its Pixel factory-image instructions.
Enter with hardware buttons
- Power the phone off.
- Use the key combination documented by the phone’s manufacturer for the exact model while powering it on. AOSP notes that some phones use a hardware combination, commonly involving volume down, but there is no universal Android sequence. Check the maker’s current instructions if you are unsure.
- For Pixel phones, Google’s current instructions specify volume down + power for Pixel 6 and later, and volume up + power for earlier models. Holding the buttons too long can restart the phone; follow the on-screen response and retry if needed. See Google’s Pixel troubleshooting instructions.
How do I exit Fastboot mode?
Use the bootloader menu’s normal startup choice when it is available. If the phone is connected to a computer and accepts Fastboot commands, run fastboot reboot; AOSP documents reboot as a Fastboot command that reboots the device.
- On the phone, use the displayed hardware controls to highlight Start or the menu’s normal reboot option, then select it. Menu wording and controls vary by model.
- Alternatively, from a computer with the phone connected in Fastboot mode, run
fastboot rebootin a terminal or command prompt.
A normal reboot is different from unlocking the bootloader or flashing an image. Avoid commands such as unlock, erase, format, or flash when you only want to start Android; they perform separate maintenance operations and can erase data.

How do I get my phone out of Fastboot mode without wiping it?
Choose the normal Start/reboot option or use fastboot reboot. Neither ordinary reboot method is the same as unlocking or flashing. AOSP says most Android devices ship with a locked bootloader; unlocking is a separate operation, and an unlock request should trigger a warning and a factory data reset. Google also warns that unlocking makes a device less secure and installing a factory image deletes user data. Back up before deliberately unlocking, resetting, or flashing.

What if the computer does not detect the phone?
- Check that the cable supports data, then try another USB port or connector. Google’s factory-image guidance notes that a cable can cause Fastboot or flashing problems even when the device appeared in ADB before rebooting.
- Check the model-appropriate USB driver and setup for the computer’s operating system. Do not assume a reset is required just because the connection fails.
- If the screen is broken or the phone does not respond to its buttons, do not guess another brand’s button sequence or run destructive commands. For Pixels, Google directs users with a nonworking display to its repair or replacement information; for other phones, consult the manufacturer’s support instructions for the exact model.
Google’s factory-image instructions and AOSP’s Fastboot documentation describe these computer-based operations, but available commands and behavior may differ by device.
