The “mysterious drones” story refers to a wave of reported sightings in New Jersey in November and December 2024—not evidence that mysterious drones are flying over the state now. Federal agencies later said reports included lawful drones, manned aircraft, helicopters, and stars mistaken for drones. As of their December 16, 2024 assessment, they had identified no anomalous activity or national-security or public-safety risk over civilian airspace, while separately acknowledging a limited number of visual sightings at military facilities.
What happened in New Jersey?
On December 3, 2024, the FBI’s Newark office, the New Jersey State Police, and the New Jersey Office of Homeland Security and Preparedness asked the public for information about possible drones reported along several parts of the Raritan River. The FBI said witnesses described a cluster of objects that looked like drones and a possible fixed-wing aircraft. Reports from the public and law enforcement dated back several weeks. The FBI’s appeal invited people with relevant information to call 1-800-CALL-FBI or submit a tip online.
What did investigators determine?
December 12: Reports were still being checked
In a joint statement on December 12, 2024, the FBI and Department of Homeland Security said: “We have no evidence at this time that the reported drone sightings pose a national security or public safety threat or have a foreign nexus.” They said investigators were assessing whether reports involved drones, manned aircraft, or inaccurate sightings. The agencies also said they had not corroborated the reported visual sightings with electronic detection and that available imagery appeared to show many lawful manned aircraft. Their statement said there were no reported or confirmed drone sightings in restricted airspace at that point. Read the December 12 statement.
December 16: Agencies described a mix of objects
A later joint statement from the FBI, DHS, Federal Aviation Administration, and Department of Defense said analysis of technical data and tips pointed to a mixture: lawful commercial, hobbyist, and law-enforcement drones; manned fixed-wing aircraft; helicopters; and stars mistaken for drones. The agencies said, “We have not identified anything anomalous and do not assess the activity to date to present a national security or public safety risk over the civilian airspace in New Jersey or other states in the northeast.” The December 16 statement distinguished its assessment of civilian airspace from reports at military facilities.

Why the restricted-airspace statements differ
The December 12 statement said there were no reported or confirmed drone sightings in restricted airspace. On December 16, the four agencies acknowledged a limited number of visual sightings of drones over military facilities, including within restricted airspace, and said sightings near or over DoD installations were not new. These were statements made on different dates and about different reporting and airspace categories; they should not be collapsed into one timeless claim. The December 16 assessment of civilian airspace remained that the agencies had identified no anomalous activity or risk.
Do the tip numbers mean thousands of confirmed drone flights?
No. In their December 16, 2024 statement, the agencies said they had received more than 5,000 reported-sighting tips in the preceding few weeks and generated approximately 100 leads. Tips and leads are not confirmed flights. The same statement noted that more than one million drones were lawfully registered with the FAA in the United States and that thousands of commercial, hobbyist, and law-enforcement drones were lawfully in the sky on a given day. Those figures appear in the agencies’ statement.

What restrictions applied at the time?
On December 19, 2024, the FAA announced 22 temporary flight restrictions over critical New Jersey infrastructure at the request of federal security partners. That was the count announced on that date, not a current count of restrictions. The FAA’s announcement explains the temporary restrictions.
In a December 17, 2024 statement, the FAA described general drone-operation rules: stay below 400 feet, keep the drone in sight, avoid other aircraft, do not create a hazard to people or property, and avoid restricted airspace. Operations are generally legal in most locations when applicable requirements are followed, but the rules do not override temporary restrictions or other airspace requirements.
