AMD’s “Crimson 16.2.1” refers to more than one archived driver entry, so there is no single package that fits every Radeon card. The official release notes cover Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Beta for non-GCN products (package version 15.301.1901); AMD’s product archives separately list Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Optional for specific cards such as the Radeon HD 7950 and R7 265. Identify your exact GPU and operating system on AMD Support, then use the matching product page rather than treating the Beta as a universal download.
Where to find the AMD Radeon Crimson 16.2.1 download
Use AMD’s official support pages to select the entry for your exact graphics product:
- For the non-GCN Beta: read AMD’s Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Beta release notes. They identify package version 15.301.1901 and describe the supported non-GCN product families.
- For a product-specific Optional entry: open the archive page for your exact card. AMD lists Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Optional on the Radeon HD 7950 previous drivers page and the Radeon R7 265 previous drivers page.
- Check the operating system and product match shown by AMD before downloading. Archive availability may change, and a listing for one Radeon model does not establish that the same package supports another.
AMD’s HD 7950 and R7 265 archive pages both show March 1, 2016 as the release date for their product-specific Optional entry. These are separate product listings, not proof that all Radeon cards use that package.
Beta versus Optional: which 16.2.1 entry is it?
| Entry | What AMD identifies | How to choose |
|---|---|---|
| Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Beta | Release notes label it a Beta Driver, package version 15.301.1901, for specified non-GCN products. | Use the release notes to check whether your exact GPU and Windows version are included. |
| Crimson Edition 16.2.1 Optional | Product-specific previous-driver entries include the Radeon HD 7950 and R7 265. Both pages show March 1, 2016. | Start from the archive page for your exact GPU; do not assume the listing applies to another model. |
AMD’s archived pages should be treated as distinct routes to distinct product listings. The Beta release notes and an Optional entry are not interchangeable names for one universal driver.

Is Crimson 16.2.1 compatible with your Radeon card?
The non-GCN Beta release notes name supported product families, but a family label alone may not establish compatibility for every board or system variant. Check the full GPU model and the exact AMD product page before installing.
Non-GCN product families named in the Beta notes
- Radeon HD 5000 and HD 6000 desktop series.
- Radeon HD 7000–7600 and HD 8000–8400 ranges.
- Selected all-in-one Radeon families.
- HD 6000D, HD 7000D, and HD 8000D desktop APU graphics.
- HD 6000G, HD 7000G, and HD 8000G mobile APU graphics.
- Mobility Radeon HD 5000M and HD 6000M families.
AMD says these non-GCN products have moved to a legacy support model. Its Error 174 legacy-hardware FAQ includes Crimson 16.2.1 Beta among the final drivers offered for the products it discusses. Later AMD Software may reject older graphics hardware because of architecture requirements; that does not mean every 16.2.1 listing supports every older Radeon.

Notebook and all-in-one systems
AMD describes the notebook package as a reference graphics driver with limited support for features specific to a system vendor. For a laptop or all-in-one, check the computer manufacturer’s support guidance as well as AMD’s exact GPU listing; the system maker may be the appropriate source for device-specific support.
Windows versions and installation conditions
For the non-GCN Beta, AMD lists Windows 10, Windows 8.1, and Windows 7 in both 32-bit and 64-bit versions. Windows 7 must be SP1 or later, and the release notes say administrator rights are required. Confirm the operating system shown on the relevant product page before downloading.

AMD states that this driver is not intended for AMD products running in Apple Boot Camp and directs Boot Camp users to their system manufacturer for support. The release notes also warn that Radeon Settings may suggest an update incompatible with non-GCN products; affected users should ignore that notification.
