What has changed is the security default: ActiveX controls are disabled by default in Microsoft 365 and Office 2024. When disabled, users cannot create new ActiveX objects or interact with existing ones. This is a default security change, not evidence that every Office ActiveX control has been permanently removed.
Is Microsoft ending ActiveX in Office?
Microsoft’s current support documentation says ActiveX controls are disabled by default in Microsoft 365 and Office 2024. It does not announce a universal end date for ActiveX across Office. Microsoft still documents ActiveX support and Trust Center settings for Windows desktop Office. Disabling controls by default and retiring the technology are different things.
The practical consequence is significant: when controls are disabled, users cannot create new ActiveX objects or interact with existing ones. A workbook, document, or presentation that depends on a control may therefore lose functionality until an authorized setting permits it to run. Microsoft does not guarantee that enabling a control will make every legacy file or workflow work as intended.
Which Office platforms support ActiveX?
ActiveX is supported in Windows desktop versions of Office. Microsoft says Office for Mac and Office for the web do not support ActiveX controls. In Microsoft 365 and Office 2024, controls are disabled by default; policy settings and the Office edition in use can also affect whether they are available.

#1 Best Overall
- Compact design saves desktop space and allows for close, comfortable mouse position.
- Optimized key spacing and key travel for fast, fluid typing.
- Sleek, low-profile design complements any workspace.
- Expressive input key[2] for quick access to emojis, symbols, and more.
- Connect up to 3 devices and switch seamlessly between them[1].
That distinction matters when diagnosing a problem: changing a Trust Center setting cannot add ActiveX support to Mac or web Office. For business-critical files, test the workflow on the actual Windows desktop version and configuration it is expected to use, with the responsible IT administrator and control vendor.
What to do if Office says an ActiveX control is blocked
First verify the file and its source
Do not enable a control simply to dismiss a warning. Microsoft cautions users against opening unexpected attachments or following unknown prompts asking them to enable ActiveX. ActiveX controls can access local files and change registry settings, so only consider enabling content in a file and from a source you trust.

Change the setting only when the workflow requires it
In supported Windows desktop Office, the documented settings path is File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings > ActiveX Settings. Microsoft 365 and Office 2024 guidance describes choosing the option that prompts before enabling controls when they are needed. Follow your organization’s instructions if the controls are managed centrally; an administrator may need to make or authorize the change.
The Trust Center ActiveX setting applies across Word, Access, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and Visio, rather than only to the file currently open. Avoid treating a broad setting change as a one-document fix, and restore the safer configuration if your administrator or workflow owner directs you to do so.

What should organizations do with legacy ActiveX files?
Inventory the files and processes that depend on ActiveX, identify which controls are essential, and validate them under the Office version and security policy users will actually run. Include the control vendor and IT security team in the decision: the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish that every control will function after enablement, nor does it provide a universal conversion path for existing files.
For new solutions, Microsoft suggests considering Form Controls, Office Add-ins, or other modern Office features instead of ActiveX. These are options to assess, not automatic replacements: compare platform availability, required behavior, security and administrative controls, and the work needed to recreate the existing process. Moving to a newer Office release does not by itself convert an ActiveX workflow.

How Office lifecycle dates relate to ActiveX
Office product support dates are separate from an ActiveX retirement date. Microsoft lists Office LTSC 2021 support ending on October 13, 2026. For Office LTSC 2024, Microsoft’s configuration matrix lists October 9, 2029, while its Office 2024 lifecycle page lists retirement on October 10, 2029. These are Office product lifecycle dates, not an announced ActiveX shutdown. Check the lifecycle page for the specific SKU when planning support.
For organizations upgrading older Office clients, Microsoft recommends Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise; if that is not possible, it identifies Office LTSC 2024 as the current volume-licensing version. That guidance is about Office upgrades, not a promise that an upgrade or subscription will restore a particular ActiveX control.
