A Linux serial terminal lets you exchange data with hardware through a serial port—for example, to debug an embedded system or interact with a microcontroller. The right choice depends less on a universal “best” ranking than on whether you want a graphical interface or command line, and which features matter for your work.

This practical shortlist brings together 12 graphical candidates listed by LinuxLinks on July 3, 2026, and four command-line tools with project or manual documentation. It is not a hands-on ranking or a feature-by-feature audit of every candidate; check each project’s current status and your distribution’s package availability before installing.

How to choose a Linux serial terminal

Start with your workflow. A GUI can make it easier to manage connections and inspect data interactively; a CLI tool may suit serial-console work, scripting, or a terminal-based setup. Then check for the capabilities your device or task requires:

  • Connection setup: saved profiles, baud-rate selection, and automatic port detection or reconnect.
  • Data inspection: logging, and ASCII or hexadecimal views if you need to inspect raw bytes.
  • Automation: scripting, redirection, or other documented automation features.
  • Transfers: whether the tool supports a file-transfer protocol you need.
  • Hardware and access: the correct serial device, electrical levels, connector and pinout, plus permission to open the device.

LinuxLinks describes serial terminals as software for communicating with devices through a serial port, often for embedded debugging and interaction with hardware such as microcontrollers. LinuxLinks’ July 3, 2026 graphical-terminal roundup lists 12 candidates, but does not establish an objectively best set of 16.

CuteCom and Cutecom-ng

CuteCom is among the graphical options in the roundup. Cutecom-ng has separate project documentation in the available sources; do not assume that its features, maintenance, or installation options apply to every project named CuteCom. Check the relevant project’s own documentation before choosing or installing it. CuteCom’s archived GitHub repository and Cutecom-ng’s project repository are distinct references.

Command-line serial terminals

These four CLI tools have project or manual documentation in the sources. Their documented emphases can help narrow the choice, but the descriptions below are not comparative test results.

Installation and serial-device access

Package names and availability vary across distributions, and the available documentation does not verify a current package for every candidate. For tio, the project recommends checking your distribution’s package manager and also describes Snap and source-build options. Follow the installation instructions for the specific tool and distribution rather than assuming one command works everywhere.

If a program reports that it cannot access the serial device, check which device node represents the port and whether your account has permission to open it. The tio project notes that adding a user to the distribution’s serial-device access group may resolve access errors; dialout is one example, not a universal group name. Use your distribution’s documented group and permission process. Consult tio’s installation and access notes.

Check the hardware connection before troubleshooting software

A USB-to-UART or USB-to-serial adapter may be needed to connect a computer to embedded hardware. Choose one only after checking the target’s electrical voltage level and the adapter’s connector and pinout; a physical connector match alone does not establish electrical compatibility. No particular adapter model or compatibility claim is established here.
