“BN59” is a family of Samsung remote model numbers, not a guarantee that one remote will work with every Samsung TV. To pair a remote or choose a replacement, identify the TV’s full model number and the remote’s full model suffix, then follow the procedure for that remote type.
How do I pair my Samsung Smart Remote to my TV?
- Restart the TV: Turn it off and back on.
- Point the remote at the TV: Aim it at the remote sensor, usually on the lower right-hand side or bottom center of the TV.
- Start pairing: Press and hold Return and Play/Pause together for at least three seconds.
- Check the screen: The TV should display a message when pairing succeeds.
These are Samsung Canada’s general instructions for the Smart Remote. If your remote lacks a combined Play/Pause button, or the on-screen instructions differ, check the manual for your exact TV and remote rather than assuming the same button sequence applies.
A standard remote with separate Play and Pause buttons may pair automatically. Keep it near the TV and make sure its batteries work; do not use the Smart Remote button combination just because the remote number starts with BN59. Samsung’s pairing and control instructions cover both approaches.
Why is my Samsung remote not pairing?
Check the batteries or charging first
- For a remote with replaceable batteries, remove and reinsert them, matching the polarity marks in the compartment. If that does not help, try a known-working set; batteries that seem new may still be discharged.
- For a SolarCell or rechargeable remote, check the specific model’s charging method. Depending on the model, it may recharge by solar power, USB, or USB-C; do not assume it takes disposable batteries.

Confirm that the pairing method matches the remote
Use Return + Play/Pause only for a Smart Remote that has those buttons and follows that procedure. A standard remote with separate Play and Pause buttons may pair automatically. If the TV still does not recognize the remote, consult the TV’s manual for model-specific instructions.
Which Samsung remote is compatible with my TV?
Use the TV’s full model number to find the remote Samsung lists for that television. Look for the model number on the TV label or use Samsung’s model-number support resources. Then search your regional Samsung parts listing, check the compatible-TV list, and match the entire remote model number—not only the BN59 prefix. What should I check before buying a replacement?
- Write down the TV’s complete model number.
- Search Samsung’s regional parts or replacement-remote listings using that TV model; look for the original remote or an officially listed replacement.
- Check the entire remote model number and its compatible-TV list. Confirm whether it uses infrared or Bluetooth and whether pairing is required.
- Match the functions and power type you need: basic control or Smart Remote features, app shortcuts, replaceable batteries, or solar/USB charging.
- If choosing a universal remote, confirm its Samsung programming code and check which functions it supports.
Can I use my phone or another control while I wait?
SmartThings app
Samsung says the SmartThings app can control a TV from a phone. If it has not already been set up, the TV may ask you to grant permission; you may be able to approve it using the TV’s physical controller button. Samsung’s instructions for phone control
Physical TV controls
The TV’s controller can provide functions such as power, volume, or channel control. Its location and behavior depend on the model, so consult the TV manual to find and use it.

Universal remote
A universal remote programmed with the correct code may control a Samsung TV or projector, but Samsung cautions that some features may not be available. For an infrared alternative, Samsung Canada recommends BN59-01301A for basic functionality and says its IR remotes work with Samsung TVs and projectors.
