On supported, managed Windows editions, use Microsoft’s Select the target Feature Update version policy to keep a device on a chosen release. Set both the Windows product and version; the policy controls feature-update offers, not the device’s support lifetime or every other kind of update.
What the target-version policy does
Microsoft describes the policy as specifying which version a device should move to or stay on until that version reaches end of service or the policy is changed. It is a way to control which feature update Windows Update offers—not a way to freeze Windows indefinitely or disable all security and quality updates. See Microsoft’s Update Policy CSP.
The policy is intended for managed Windows client editions. Microsoft’s documented scope includes Pro (including Pro for Workstations), Enterprise, Education, and IoT editions; Home is not listed. Availability also depends on the Windows build and prerequisite updates. Check the policy requirements and current administrative templates for the device before configuring it. Microsoft outlines the supported management approaches in Windows Update client policies.
Set a target with Group Policy
On an eligible device, configure the policy in Local Group Policy Editor, or in the relevant domain policy if the device is centrally managed.

- Open the policy editor and go to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Manage updates offered from Windows Update.
- Open Select the target Feature Update version and set it to Enabled.
- Enter the Windows product, such as Windows 10 or Windows 11, and the target feature update version in the corresponding fields.
- Apply the policy and verify that the device is eligible for that release and that no other management policy is directing it to a different target.
Both fields matter: selecting only a version number does not identify whether the target is Windows 10 or Windows 11. Policy names and availability can vary with the installed administrative templates, so use current templates and Microsoft’s policy documentation as the reference.
Configure the target through MDM or Intune
For MDM, Microsoft’s Update CSP provides ProductVersion and TargetReleaseVersion. Configure both: ProductVersion identifies Windows 10 or Windows 11, while TargetReleaseVersion identifies the feature release. The CSP documents device scope and the applicable editions and prerequisites; check its current requirements rather than assuming every build can accept the setting.

In Intune, review the feature update policies assigned to the device. Each policy targets one version. If multiple policies apply, Windows Update offers one update and selects the latest applicable version, so overlapping assignments can produce a different offer than a single intended target. Microsoft explains this behavior in Configure Windows Feature Update Policies.
Why deferrals are not the same as a version hold
Feature-update deferrals postpone a newer release of the same Windows product. They do not, by themselves, move a Windows 10 device to Windows 11; a product target must explicitly identify Windows 11 for that transition. Conversely, when the aim is to remain on a particular release, use the target-version control rather than assuming a deferral is a permanent pin. Microsoft explains the distinction in Prepare for Windows 11.

Check support before holding an older release
A target-version policy does not extend servicing support. When a release reaches end of service, the hold no longer provides a supported way to stay on it; Microsoft says the device stays at the specified version until end of service or until the policy is reconfigured. Check the lifecycle date for the exact edition and servicing channel in Microsoft’s Supported versions of Windows client.
Microsoft lists October 13, 2026 as the end-of-updates date for Windows 11 version 24H2 Home and Pro; Enterprise and Education have different dates. Because that date is near, confirm the current lifecycle table before relying on it. Microsoft states that Windows 10 support ended October 14, 2025. Do not treat a standard Windows 10 release as supported merely because a policy can target it; consult Microsoft’s Windows support guidance for the implications and any applicable servicing program.

If Windows offers a different version than expected
- Confirm the product and version fields. The target must identify both Windows 10 or Windows 11 and the intended feature release.
- Check edition, build, and prerequisites. The documented policy does not apply to every edition or build, and eligibility requirements may affect whether the target is offered.
- Review all assigned management policies. For Intune-managed devices, inspect every feature update policy that applies; overlapping assignments can affect the selected offer.
- Check the target’s servicing status. An older release’s lifecycle can end while the policy is configured to hold it.
