To make a Mermaid diagram in Markdown, put its definition in a fenced code block labeled mermaid. The diagram renders only if the application displaying your Markdown supports Mermaid; the code block alone does not guarantee a visual diagram. Mermaid’s guide names GitHub and GitLab as examples of Markdown-supporting applications: Mermaid’s getting-started guide.
Write a Mermaid diagram in a Markdown file
Start with three backticks followed by mermaid, write the diagram definition, then close the fence with three backticks. The first line inside the block declares the diagram type. In this flowchart, LR means left to right:

```Here is a slightly more complete example, with labeled branches:

Start([Start]) --> Draft[Write the Mermaid block]
Draft --> Preview{Does the host render Mermaid?}

Preview -->|No| Editor[Preview in Mermaid's editor]
```The flowchart declaration selects the diagram type and direction; the remaining lines define nodes and connections. Mermaid’s syntax reference explains that definitions normally begin with a diagram-type declaration and cautions that unknown words or misspellings can break parsing.

Check that your Markdown application renders Mermaid
Markdown syntax does not define Mermaid rendering for every app. The receiving application needs to support Mermaid and have it enabled or otherwise configured. Mermaid’s getting-started guide names GitHub and GitLab as examples, but do not assume that an arbitrary Markdown editor, preview pane, or publishing system will render the same block. Check the target host’s current documentation or test the actual page before publishing.
For a quick visual check, paste the definition into the Mermaid Live Editor. The official site describes it as a live-preview editor that can be used without an account. A successful preview confirms that the editor can parse the definition; it does not establish that your Markdown host supports Mermaid.

Use Mermaid’s JavaScript API on a webpage you control
If your destination is your own HTML page rather than a Markdown host with native Mermaid support, Mermaid documents a JavaScript-based option. Put the diagram source in a <pre class="mermaid"> element and load Mermaid’s JavaScript module; Mermaid then locates the definitions and renders them as SVG. Follow the current Mermaid usage instructions for installation and the module-loading example.
This approach gives you control over the webpage setup, but it is not the same as pasting a Markdown fence into a page and expecting it to work. The page must load Mermaid’s JavaScript. Mermaid’s usage documentation says versions 12.0.0 and later target ES2024 and aim to support Safari 17.4 or later; check that page when choosing a runtime, since requirements can change with releases.

Keep the source easy to read and debug
- Declare the right diagram type. Start with a declaration such as
flowchart LRorsequenceDiagram. The declaration tells Mermaid which parser and diagram format to use. - Use comments sparingly. Mermaid flowcharts accept comments on their own lines beginning with
%%. - Prefer readable lines to dense shorthand. Mermaid supports compact expressions, link labels, direction settings, and Markdown strings for formatted or multiline labels, but compressed source can be harder to understand and maintain.
- Reduce parsing errors to a small example. Check the declaration and spelling first, then remove or simplify lines until the failing construct is isolated.

The Mermaid documentation describes both methods but does not provide a performance comparison. Choose based on the target page’s support and how much of its rendering setup you control.
