If your MacBook will not start up after a macOS update, first identify whether it has no power or turns on but remains at a blank screen, Apple logo, or progress bar. For a Mac that is powered on but stuck at a blank screen, force it off once, disconnect accessories, and try macOS Recovery. The update timing alone does not prove the update caused the problem; Apple says update errors can have different causes and may be temporary.
First, identify what the Mac is doing
Notice whether the Mac shows any sign of power and what appears on the screen. A blank screen can occur during normal startup, but a Mac that stays there needs troubleshooting. Apple lists varied causes for update errors, so a failure immediately after an update does not by itself establish that the update caused it. Try a full shutdown and remove accessories
Force a shutdown only if the Mac is stuck
If the Mac appears to be on but remains at a blank screen, press and hold the power button for up to 10 seconds until it turns off, then turn it on again. On a Mac laptop with Touch ID, press and hold the Touch ID button; do not just tap it. Avoid repeatedly forcing shutdown while an installer is visibly progressing.
Disconnect peripherals
Unplug USB, USB-C, Thunderbolt, and other accessories, then try starting the Mac. If it starts normally, reconnect devices one at a time and restart after each connection to identify whether one is affecting startup. If you use an external display, check the display separately. Apple also covers startup delays and peripherals in its Mac startup guide.

Open macOS Recovery using the right method
The startup procedure depends on whether your Mac has Apple silicon or an Intel processor. If you are unsure which it has, use the procedure that matches your model; do not combine the two sets of steps.

Apple’s macOS Recovery instructions provide the startup gestures. For Intel shortcut details, see Apple’s startup key combinations. The exact version offered depends on the Mac and the recovery method; do not assume a particular macOS version without checking those details.

If Internet Recovery shows an error
Warning screens and many numbered errors during Internet Recovery relate to the network or internet connection. Try a stable connection or another network. Some captive-login, 802.1X, and PPPoE networks can prevent Recovery reinstallation from connecting.
Repair the startup disk, then reinstall macOS if necessary
- From Recovery, open Disk Utility. Select the startup disk and use Disk Utility to repair it.
- Restart the Mac. Check whether it starts normally.
- If it still reaches a blank screen, return to Recovery and reinstall macOS. Apple recommends Recovery installation and startup-disk repair for update or installation failures. Follow Apple’s reinstall macOS instructions.
Protect your data and let the installer finish
- Back up the Mac before reinstalling if you can.
- Apple says reinstalling macOS from Recovery does not remove apps or personal data, but it still recommends backing up first if possible.
- Keep the Mac connected to the internet. Do not put it to sleep or close the lid while the installer is running.
- Several restarts and a blank screen for minutes can occur during installation. Do not interrupt an installation merely because the screen is temporarily blank.
- If the installer asks you to choose between “Macintosh HD” and “Macintosh HD – Data,” choose “Macintosh HD.”
When to stop troubleshooting and contact Apple
Firmware revival or restoration is a rare, model-dependent escalation for persistent installation problems on Apple silicon or a Mac with the Apple T2 Security Chip—not a first step. It may be considered when Recovery cannot start. If Disk Utility cannot see or erase the startup disk, or the screen remains blank after the available Recovery steps, contact Apple Support or arrange service. Apple’s update troubleshooting and blank-screen guidance describe these escalation paths.
