If your computer reports a SMART warning, copy your important files to another storage location now. A drive can still appear to work while reporting a monitored condition that crossed a manufacturer-set threshold. The warning is a reason to act—not a reliable countdown to failure. After protecting your data, identify the drive and follow the computer or drive maker’s diagnostic guidance.

What does a SMART error mean?

SMART (Self-Monitoring, Analysis and Reporting Technology) is built into storage-drive firmware. It monitors selected health-related attributes and can report when a manufacturer-defined threshold has been crossed. Seagate describes a system SMART error as a near-term warning, but the attributes and thresholds vary among drive designs. An alert can be serious even if the computer still starts and files remain accessible. Seagate Support’s SMART-error guidance

SMART does not predict every failure or tell you exactly how long a drive will last. The firmware tracks only specific conditions and cannot foresee an instantaneous failure. As Seagate’s Savvio 15K.4 manual puts it, “The drive’s firmware monitors specific attributes for degradation over time but can’t predict instantaneous drive failures.” Seagate Savvio 15K.4 Product Manual

Is my hard drive about to fail?

A SMART warning means the drive reported a monitored condition outside its maker’s threshold; it does not establish the precise timing or certainty of failure. Treat it as urgent because the drive may become less reliable, not as a timer you can safely wait out. SMART also cannot guarantee that a drive without a warning is healthy: sudden failures may not be predicted by the attributes it monitors.

Do not use a raw attribute number from a generic utility as a universal pass/fail rule. Thresholds and attribute interpretations differ by manufacturer and design, and Seagate cautions that third-party tools can produce inconsistent results. Use the maker’s guidance for the exact drive rather than relying on a single online cutoff. Seagate Internal Hard Drive Troubleshooter

What should I do if my computer says SMART status bad?

  1. Back up important files first. Copy irreplaceable documents, photos, and other data to a different storage device or location. A second partition on the same physical drive is not a separate copy. Seagate’s advice after a system SMART error is to back up as soon as possible and maintain consistent backups. Seagate Support
  2. Identify the drive and warning. Note the exact message and determine which internal or external drive triggered it. Consult the computer, drive, or enclosure maker’s instructions for that model and connection type.
  3. Run the appropriate manufacturer diagnostic only after backing up. For supported Seagate storage devices, Seagate names SeaTools as a diagnostic option. Its instructions describe SMART Check and short and long drive tests; these are not universal instructions for every manufacturer or interface. Seagate Backup Plus Hub manual: hard drive tests
  4. Act on the result. Seagate says to replace a drive if its SeaTools test reports failure. Keep the backup intact and arrange replacement through the manufacturer or retailer as appropriate; warranty eligibility depends on the specific product and applicable terms.

How do I check my hard drive health?

Start with the manufacturer’s recommended diagnostic for the exact drive. Seagate’s Backup Plus Hub manual lists these options for a supported Seagate device and says to back up before testing. The manual describes the Long Generic test as progressing in increments and potentially taking several hours. It does not establish that every test from every maker is harmless or capable of repairing a drive.

Could ventilation fix a SMART warning?

Only consider airflow as a response when the warning specifically concerns excessive temperature. Seagate suggests checking ventilation and fans in that situation. Better airflow may address heat conditions, but it does not repair an underlying disk problem and should not be assumed to resolve other SMART alerts. Seagate Support’s SMART-error guidance
