Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →On a systemd-based Linux host, restart PHP-FPM with sudo systemctl restart <php-fpm-unit>, replacing the placeholder with the unit installed on that system. On Alpine Linux, which uses OpenRC, use doas rc-service <php-fpm-service> restart or the appropriate administrative privilege tool. There is no single PHP restart command for every Linux or Unix system: first identify the service manager and exact PHP-FPM service name.
Find the PHP-FPM service name before restarting
PHP-FPM is a service you can manage when the application uses PHP-FPM. The unit or service name depends on the distribution, PHP package version, and init system; there is not necessarily a universal service called php.
- Identify the operating system and service manager. The commands below cover systemd-based Linux and Alpine Linux with OpenRC.
- Find the installed PHP-FPM service name. Debian-family packages use versioned systemd units; the Debian package examined by the PHP project is for PHP 8.4 and uses a versioned unit, but your host may have another PHP version. Red Hat documentation uses
php-fpm. On Alpine, the PHP manual’s PHP 8.3 example uses the service namephp-fpm83. - Run the matching restart command with administrative privileges.
- Check service status and the application response afterward. A successful restart does not guarantee that it will resolve every PHP problem.
Restart PHP-FPM on systemd Linux
Use systemctl on a systemd host. The unit name varies by distribution and installed package:
| System or packaging example | Restart command | Naming detail |
|---|---|---|
| Debian-family package example | sudo systemctl restart php8.4-fpm |
The Debian source package examined is PHP 8.4 and uses a versioned unit. Replace 8.4 with the version actually installed; do not assume this example matches your host. Debian package source. |
| RHEL documentation example | sudo systemctl restart php-fpm |
Red Hat documentation names the service php-fpm. Check the installed unit and release on your system. RHEL 9 PHP guidance. |
If the command reports that the unit cannot be found, verify that PHP-FPM is installed and inspect the service name provided by your distribution. The application may use a different PHP integration, or the host may have a custom service setup.

Restart PHP-FPM on Alpine Linux
Alpine uses OpenRC rather than systemd. The PHP manual’s PHP 8.3 example installs the php83-fpm package and restarts its OpenRC service using the name php-fpm83:
doas rc-service php-fpm83 restart
The package name and service name put the version suffix in different positions. Confirm the service name for the PHP version installed on your Alpine host instead of assuming the PHP 8.3 example applies to another version. PHP manual: Alpine Linux installation.

Restart versus reload
Restart and reload are distinct service actions. The PHP project’s systemd unit template defines reload as sending USR2 to the main FPM process with ExecReload=/bin/kill -USR2 $MAINPID. That template does not establish identical behavior for every packaged unit or init system. Check the service definition and PHP documentation for your host before choosing an operation for a production change. PHP-FPM systemd unit template.
Does restarting PHP-FPM restart Apache or Nginx?
Not necessarily. PHP-FPM and the web server can be separately managed services; Red Hat’s guidance describes separate FPM and Apache service operations. Restarting the FPM unit targets FPM, not automatically Apache or Nginx. The PHP manual’s Alpine guidance likewise says to restart FPM or the web server after extension changes, depending on the setup. When these commands do not apply
The commands here cover the cited systemd and Alpine/OpenRC examples, not every Unix variant, legacy SysV installation, container image, hosting control panel, or custom init configuration. For those environments, use the host or vendor’s service documentation and inspect the installed service definition rather than applying a Linux example blindly.
