Check your device’s Wi-Fi settings and look for the name of the network you expect to use alongside a connected status. That confirms the device has joined the Wi-Fi network—but not necessarily that the internet is working. To check internet access, open a webpage or app that requires an online connection.

Check Wi-Fi status on Windows 10 or Windows 11

  1. Select the Network, Sound, or Battery area on the right side of the taskbar to open Quick Settings.
  2. Make sure Wi-Fi is turned on.
  3. Find the network you expect to use. If “Connected” appears beneath its name, your PC has joined that Wi-Fi network.
  4. If it is not connected, select a network you recognize and try connecting.

Microsoft says the Windows Wi-Fi Connected icon indicates a Wi-Fi and internet connection, but an app, website, or firewall can still prevent a particular service from working. If the signal bars are moving, Windows is still connecting; when they stop moving and show a signal level, the device is connected. See Microsoft’s Windows Wi-Fi troubleshooting guide.

Check Wi-Fi status on iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings > Wi-Fi.
  2. Look for the network you intend to use. A blue checkmark beside its name, together with the Wi-Fi icon in the upper corner of the screen, means the device is connected.
  3. If prompted for a password or to accept network terms, complete that step and check the status again.

These are the connection indicators described by Apple’s iPhone and iPad Wi-Fi guide, published September 14, 2026.

Check Wi-Fi status on Android

  1. Open Settings > Network & internet > Internet and inspect the connected or selected network.
  2. Alternatively, swipe down from the top of the screen, tap Internet, and check which network is selected.
  3. Look at the Wi-Fi icon for signal strength: a fuller icon indicates a stronger signal, not proof that internet access is working.

Menu names can vary by manufacturer, and Google notes that some steps in its instructions apply only to Android 12 and later. See Google’s Android instructions for connecting to Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi connection does not always mean internet access

Wi-Fi connects your device to a nearby local network. Internet access means that network can reach services beyond itself. A device can stay connected to Wi-Fi even when the network has no internet access, so the Wi-Fi icon alone cannot settle whether websites or apps will work.

If online access is what you need to verify, open a webpage or internet-dependent app. If it fails, try the same Wi-Fi network on another device. If that device also cannot get online, the issue may be with the network or its internet connection; if only one app or site fails, the problem may be limited to that service. For Windows, Microsoft recommends checking for a “No Internet” status and using the built-in network troubleshooter when appropriate. Persistent failures may involve network settings or services such as TCP/IP, DHCP, DNS, a proxy, or a firewall; the appropriate fix depends on the cause. Microsoft’s technical guidance on this distinction is available at Troubleshoot TCP/IP connectivity.
