Change only the setting that matches the evidence. A PC starting after shutdown is a different problem from a PC resuming from Sleep.
First, identify what “waking up” means
Watch what happens and when. A PC that resumes from Sleep may be responding to a keyboard, mouse, laptop lid, presence-sensing feature, device, or timer. On many PCs, pressing a key, clicking a mouse, or opening the lid is an expected way to resume Sleep—not a fault. Microsoft explains the differences between Sleep, hibernation, and shutdown in its guide to shutting down, sleeping, or hibernating a PC.
If the computer appears to start after a full shutdown, do not assume the Sleep troubleshooting steps below apply: a startup after shutdown is not the same as a resume from Sleep. First establish which state the PC was in.
Turn off wake on approach if your PC supports it
Some Windows 11 PCs have Presence Sensing settings that can wake the device when you approach. To check, open Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep and look for Automatically wake up my device when I approach. If it is present and enabled, switch it off. Microsoft notes that Presence Sensing options depend on the PC and may be restricted on organization-managed devices. See Microsoft’s guide to managing Presence Sensing settings.

On systems that support S3 sleep, a USB-connected presence sensor may also require a BIOS setting called USB Wake Support or something similar. That detail applies to the specific USB presence-sensor scenario; do not change BIOS settings unless it matches your hardware and setup.
Use Powercfg to find devices and timers that can wake the PC
Open Command Prompt and run these commands, one at a time:

powercfg /lastwake— reports information about what woke the system from its last sleep transition. Microsoft describes this command as: “/lastwake | Reports information about what woke the system from the last sleep transition.”powercfg /waketimers— lists active wake timers. Microsoft documents that timer expiration can wake a system from Sleep or hibernation.powercfg /devicequery wake_armed— lists devices currently configured to wake the system.
These commands are diagnostic, not a guarantee that Windows will identify the cause. An empty or inconclusive result does not establish that no wake trigger exists. For more detail on the commands, see Microsoft’s Powercfg command-line options reference.
Disable wake permission for a device only when it is the culprit
If the output identifies a device that should not be able to wake the PC, copy its exact name from powercfg /devicequery wake_armed and run:

powercfg /devicedisablewake "DEVICE NAME"
Replace DEVICE NAME with the name shown on your PC, keeping quotation marks around it. Disabling wake permission for a keyboard, mouse, or other device also removes the ability to use that device for an intentional wake. Choose a different wake method if you still need one.
Interpret wake timers cautiously
If powercfg /waketimers lists an active timer, Windows has a timer capable of waking the system. The available Microsoft timer-disabling walkthrough located for this topic is explicitly for Windows 7, so it should not be treated as verified Windows 11 instructions. The command can help identify a timer, but the evidence here does not establish a current Windows 11 menu path for turning off all wake timers.

Set sleep timing separately—or use hibernation or shutdown
To change how long the PC waits before its screen turns off or it enters Sleep, go to Settings > System > Power & battery > Screen and sleep. These controls set sleep timing; they do not identify or disable the trigger that wakes the PC.
If your priority is for the PC to remain inactive while you are away, hibernation or full shutdown may be preferable to Sleep. Hibernation uses less power than Sleep, but it is not available on every PC. Neither option diagnoses or fixes the underlying wake trigger.
