If you forgot your Mac username, Apple’s direct lookup is Finder > Go > Home. The account name—also called the short name—appears at the top of the Finder window. If you are already at a username prompt, Apple says you can enter either your full name or account name. These are situations to try, not three equivalent recovery methods: Apple documents Finder as the direct way to look up the account name.
How do I find my username on a Mac?
1. Look it up in Finder when you’re signed in
- Open Finder.
- In the menu bar, choose Go > Home.
- Read the account name shown at the top of the Finder window.
Apple calls this identifier the account name or short name. It is the local name associated with your Mac user account, rather than the name of your Apple Account. See Apple’s instructions for finding a user or account name on Mac.
2. Try your full name at a username prompt
If a login, file-sharing, or screen-sharing prompt asks for a username and you do not know the short name, try the full name associated with the Mac account. Apple Support says either the full name or account name can be entered in these prompts. This helps when you need to sign in or connect, but it does not reveal the short name itself.
3. Check which account or credential the prompt wants
“Mac username” can refer to different things in everyday use. Before entering details, identify whether the prompt is asking for the local Mac account name, an Apple Account sign-in, or a password. The Apple Account was formerly called Apple ID.

- Only 0.11mm thin — thin enough that your fingers glide naturally without extra effort. The precision-molded shape hugs every key so tightly you'll forget it's there, yet still lets the backlight shine through clearly. Designed for US ANSI MacBook Pro 14"/16" and Air 13"/15" (M1-M5).
- Precision-engineered to sit flush across every key, so the cover stays in place even during fast typing. Won't leave marks or imprints on your MacBook screen when closing the lid — no grease stains, no residue, no hassle. Just peel, place, and type.
- Made from premium engineering-grade TPU — flexible yet durable enough to handle daily wear. Seals out dust, crumbs, pet hair, and accidental spills before they get trapped under your keys. Touch ID still works seamlessly; the material is thin enough not to interfere.
- Snap it on in under 30 seconds — no sticky adhesive, no complicated alignment. Completely washable with soap and water; dry it off and it's good as new. Reuse it for months without peeling or losing shape.
- Choose from Clear, Translucent Tinted, or Smokey (surround Touch ID) — each lets the backlight glow through naturally. The matte finish resists fingerprints and oil buildup, keeping your keyboard looking crisp longer.
- Local Mac account name: The account name or short name used for your Mac user account.
- Apple Account: Usually an email address or phone number used for Apple services. On a signed-in Mac, check it at Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > Sign-In & Security. If you cannot sign in, follow Apple’s instructions for finding a forgotten Apple Account primary email address or phone number.
- Mac login password: The password for signing in to the Mac. It is separate from the account name and may also be different from your Apple Account password. If you forgot it, use Apple’s Mac login password reset instructions.
Can I check the account name in Users & Groups?
If you can access the Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > Users & Groups, then select the info button next to a user to view that user’s details. Apple documents this as the current user-management area; its dedicated forgotten-name guidance points to Finder > Go > Home for the direct lookup. System Settings labels and layout can vary by macOS release. See Apple’s Users & Groups settings guide.
Should I change the Mac account name?
Usually not just to recover it. Apple describes the account name as permanent and says changing it requires creating a completely new user. Apple also documents a separate technical process for changing a macOS user account and home folder; it calls for another administrator account and a backup. Treat that as a planned account change, not a quick username-recovery step. See Apple’s account-name guidance and instructions on changing a macOS user account and home folder.
