Start with Samsung’s built-in Picture Test. If the black vertical lines appear in the test, contact Samsung for service. If they do not, check the connected source, cable, channel, or broadcast signal—the test helps separate a TV-side problem from an external one.
1. Run Samsung’s Picture Test
The Picture Test displays an image generated by the TV, rather than by a connected device or broadcast. Its result determines which troubleshooting path to follow.
- For 2022-and-later TVs: Open All Settings > Support > Device Care > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test.
- For earlier models: Open Settings > Support > Self Diagnosis > Picture Test.
- Check whether the black lines are visible on the test image.
Samsung lists these menu paths in its US picture troubleshooting guidance. Labels and availability can vary by model and region; if the path does not match your TV, check its on-screen menus or manual.
2. If the lines do not appear in Picture Test
A clear test suggests the symptom may be coming from the device, cable, channel, or signal you were watching rather than appearing in the TV’s own test image. Narrow it down before replacing anything.

Check the input, device, and cable
- Switch to another input or source. If the lines appear only with one connected device, the issue may be specific to that device or its connection.
- For an HDMI-connected device, check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends. If the lines persist, try a known-good replacement HDMI cable.
- If a replacement cable does not resolve the problem, troubleshoot the connected device. Samsung recommends replacing the cable first and then checking the external device when the test image is clear (Samsung US guidance; Samsung support guidance).
A cable replacement is relevant only when the symptom is isolated to an external connection. It will not repair lines that also appear in Picture Test.
Check channels and broadcast equipment
- Change channels to see whether the lines are limited to one channel.
- If you use a set-top box, compare its picture with another source or device.
- If the issue is limited to a channel or broadcast service, contact your broadcaster or provider to check the signal or equipment. Samsung’s regional support guidance also recommends checking channel- or signal-specific symptoms.
3. If the lines appear in Picture Test
If the lines are visible in the TV-generated test image, Samsung’s US guidance is to request service. Have these details ready when you contact support:

Black lines can sometimes be associated with a cracked screen, but the symptom alone does not establish the cause. Samsung notes that physical damage is not covered by warranty under its cited US guidance. Whether a repair is worthwhile, what part is needed, and whether any coverage applies depend on the TV and the diagnosis.

Do not open the TV, press or heat the screen, or manipulate internal panel connections as a do-it-yourself fix. The available Samsung troubleshooting guidance does not recommend these steps, and the exact fault and repair cannot be determined from the lines alone. Use the Picture Test result to choose between checking external equipment and requesting service.
