In a March 20, 2024 livestream, Neuralink PRIME participant Noland Arbaugh moved a computer cursor and played online chess using neural signals recorded by an implanted brain-computer interface (BCI). Neuralink describes the system as decoding intended movement—not reading arbitrary private thoughts. The demonstration showed one participant using an investigational system; it did not establish that the device restores normal movement or is proven safe and effective for everyone.

What the March 2024 video showed

Arbaugh, the first participant in Neuralink’s PRIME study, demonstrated moving a cursor and playing chess online. Neuralink said he also used the system with additional computer applications and games. In contemporaneous reporting, Arbaugh said, “If y’all can see the cursor moving around the screen, that’s all me.”

He described first trying to imagine moving his hand, then finding it intuitive to imagine the cursor moving: “From there, I think it just became intuitive for me to start imagining the cursor moving.” That is a description of his experience, not a promise that other users will learn or perform the same way. WIRED’s report on the livestream noted the limits of the details publicly available at the time.

How the brain-computer interface controls a cursor

Neuralink’s explanation is that the implant records neural activity associated with intended movement, then an app decodes that data and translates it into computer actions such as cursor movement. The point is not that the system understands any thought a person has; it is designed to interpret signals relevant to a specific control task.

The components Neuralink describes

  • N1 Implant: Neuralink says it records neural activity and transmits it to the app. Its PRIME brochure describes 1,024 electrodes across 64 flexible threads. That is a device specification, not a measure of clinical performance.
  • R1 Robot: The brochure says the robot places the implant’s flexible threads in a brain region associated with movement intention.
  • N1 User App: Neuralink says the application decodes neural data and turns it into actions, including cursor movement.

These are Neuralink’s descriptions of its system, not independent validation of how well it works. The company’s explanation appears in its PRIME Study brochure and April 2024 progress update.

What the 4.6 BPS figure means

Neuralink reported that Arbaugh reached 4.6 bits per second (BPS) during his first research session and described it as a human BCI cursor-control record. This is a company-reported result from an early research session—not an independently verified benchmark, a typical-user outcome, or evidence that the same speed will be achieved in other settings. Neuralink’s account is in its participant-experience update.

What the demonstration does—and does not—establish

  • It establishes: The livestream documented Arbaugh using an investigational BCI to move a cursor and play chess, with the company reporting other computer uses.
  • It does not establish: That the system reads unrestricted thoughts, restores ordinary physical movement, or has proven long-term safety or effectiveness for a broad population.
  • It is not a controlled comparison: A short public demonstration cannot by itself show how the system compares with other access methods or how its results hold up over time.

Arbaugh reportedly used a mouth stick or family assistance to access a computer before implantation. Neuralink’s 2024 account includes his personal view that the BCI was “just as good if not better” than a mouth stick for him at that point. That is his individual assessment; it does not establish that a neural interface is better for other people or appropriate for every user.

Is Neuralink available to buy or approved for general use?

No. Neuralink’s PRIME brochure describes the N1 Implant, R1 Robot, and N1 User App as investigational study devices and says they are not for sale. Its current clinical-trials page says: “Neuralink devices are investigational and have not been approved by the FDA or other regulatory authorities.” Participation in a study is not a guarantee of benefit.

An investigational-device exemption allows a device to be studied in a clinical investigation; it is not general market approval. Neuralink’s February 2025 update, “A Year of Telepathy,” said three people had received the implant by that date. That is a dated company count, not a current participant total.

How this fits with other computer-access methods

A mouth stick is a different access method: it lets a person interact with a device through physical input, while Neuralink’s system is intended to control a cursor through decoded neural signals. The best fit depends on an individual’s abilities, needs, preferences, and circumstances. The available account does not support a universal ranking, and the video does not endorse a particular mouth-stick product.
