The right fix depends on whether Windows is still updating, the package does not support the hardware, another component is blocking setup, or an existing driver installation is damaged. Work through the least disruptive steps first, then use the error-specific routes below.
Before you troubleshoot: record the error and identify your Radeon GPU
Write down the exact message or error code before closing the installer. AMD uses different codes for different conditions, including pending Windows work, a Windows Update driver change, unsupported hardware or operating systems, and general installation failures. A remedy for one code may not apply to another.
Identify the exact graphics product and whether it is in a laptop or prebuilt system. AMD’s current Adrenalin installation guide supports Windows 11 version 21H2 and later for compatible Radeon graphics, but support depends on the specific product and package. The guide was last updated February 9, 2026, and its illustrated flow uses Adrenalin Edition 26.1.1 with an RX 9070; screens and options can differ by release, GPU, and OEM customization. 1. Download the package for your exact GPU and system
Do not assume the newest general Radeon package supports every AMD graphics product. Use AMD’s Auto-Detect and Install tool or Product Selector to find a matching package. Auto-Detect is described by AMD for Windows 11 and Windows 10 64-bit version 1809 and later; the selector is useful when you know the exact model and want to choose it manually.

For customized graphics in a laptop or prebuilt computer, check the computer maker’s support page as well. OEM-specific graphics may require a driver from the system builder rather than AMD’s standard package.

2. Restart Windows and let pending updates finish
If the installer displays Error 206, AMD says a Windows installation or update is pending. Restart the PC, allow Windows to complete its work, and then run the AMD installer again. For a Windows Update driver reversion, note the message and check which driver is currently installed before repeatedly reinstalling the same package. A Windows Update change and an AMD installer failure are not necessarily the same problem.
3. Troubleshoot Error 1603 as a general installation failure
Error 1603 does not identify one specific cause. AMD lists possible causes that include driver or software conflicts, antivirus false positives, missing critical or important Windows updates, damaged Visual C++ Redistributable files, and corrupted registry or system files. - Install pending Windows updates. Open Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, install available updates, and restart if prompted. Retry the AMD package after Windows has finished.
- Use the full AMD package. Download the appropriate package for your GPU instead of relying on a partial or interrupted download.
- Check for software conflicts. AMD recommends using Windows selective startup to isolate non-Microsoft services and startup items that may interfere with installation. Follow AMD’s linked Error 1603 procedure for the detailed selective-startup steps; restore normal startup after testing.
- Check required Windows services. AMD says its installer needs certain Windows services present and running, including Plug and Play. If a required service is unavailable, resolve that Windows issue before another install attempt.
- Repair affected Windows components if needed. AMD documents reinstalling affected Visual C++ Redistributable packages and running DISM and System File Checker (SFC) as an administrator when component or system-file corruption is suspected. Use AMD’s Error 1603 guide for the commands and sequence.
AMD’s installation instructions state: “The AMD Software Installer requires certain Windows Services to be present and running on the system to be able to install drivers, such as the Plug and Play service.”
4. Remove conflicting AMD software remnants
If an older AMD package or one of its components is interfering with setup, AMD recommends its AMD Cleanup Utility or Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter for package conflicts. These are cleanup routes, not a substitute for selecting a package compatible with the GPU.

The Adrenalin installer may also offer Factory Reset. AMD says this removes earlier AMD Software packages, temporarily pauses Windows Updates, restarts the PC, and continues setup after reboot. It also removes the ability to roll back to the previous driver, so choose it only if that trade-off is acceptable and save open work first. Availability depends on the installer and system. AMD’s Radeon installation guide describes Clean Install as an option that attempts to remove detected Radeon Software and AMD drivers before installing the selected components. AMD says it may resolve common problems caused by corrupted installations; it forces a reboot. Save open work before starting. The option appears only when supported by what the installer detects, so its availability can vary. AMD’s installation guide

6. Treat Error 182 as a hardware or package-source mismatch
Error 182 can mean the detected graphics product belongs to a group the standard package does not support. AMD identifies Embedded Radeon, legacy Radeon, and OEM-customized Radeon graphics among the possible cases. Re-running the same general Adrenalin installer may not help. AMD’s Error 182 guide
- Embedded Radeon: select the product through AMD’s Radeon Embedded product page.
- Legacy Radeon: find the final compatible package for that product rather than assuming a current general package supports it.
- OEM-customized graphics: obtain the driver from the computer maker or relevant system partner.
When the installer still fails: save its logs for support
If setup is interrupted or a component does not install, choose View Log in the installer to open Report.xml. AMD says it contains information about the graphics hardware and software components installed; it is stored at C:Program FilesAMDCIMReports. AMD’s installation guide
For unresolved Error 1603 or Error 182 cases, AMD asks users to attach C:Program FilesAMDCIMLogInstall.log when contacting support. Include the exact error message, GPU and computer model, Windows version, package version, and steps already attempted so support can understand the failure without asking you to repeat blind retries.
