A 5G-capable phone still needs local coverage, carrier and device compatibility, an eligible plan, and an active SIM or eSIM. If 5G is unavailable, a phone may fall back to LTE or 4G; a missing 5G icon alone does not mean the phone is broken.
First identify what is failing
Before changing settings, note the exact status-bar message and where the problem occurs. These clues help distinguish a coverage or carrier issue from a data setting or device problem.
- No cellular service: The phone shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, or cannot connect to the carrier at all.
- Calls work, but mobile data does not: Check mobile data, the selected line, plan status, and carrier provisioning.
- Data works on LTE or 4G but not 5G: Check 5G coverage, device and plan eligibility, and the selected network mode.
- The problem happens in one place: Local coverage or a temporary outage is more likely than a phone fault. If it happens in several locations, check the account, SIM or eSIM, compatibility, and phone settings.
A phone can use LTE or 4G when 5G coverage is unavailable, according to Samsung’s 5G guidance. Treat the 5G icon as a coverage clue, not a hardware diagnosis.
Check coverage, carrier service, and eligibility
Confirm coverage where you are
Use your carrier’s coverage information for your current location, then check whether service works in another area. Coverage can vary by location, carrier, and country. A carrier outage or weak local signal can interrupt service even when the phone and plan otherwise support 5G.

Confirm the phone, plan, and SIM are supported
Ask the carrier whether your exact phone model is supported on its 5G network and whether your plan includes the required service. Confirm that the SIM or eSIM is activated and provisioned on the line. Samsung notes that some older SIM cards may not support 5G; Google also says 5G availability varies by carrier and country. Check the phone’s line, data, and network settings
Menu labels differ by model and software version, so treat these paths as examples. If you use dual SIM, verify that the line you intend to use is enabled and selected for mobile data.

- Turn on mobile data. Check the cellular or mobile-data setting for the intended SIM or line.
- Select a network mode that includes 5G. On some Samsung Galaxy devices, the example path is Settings > Connections > Mobile networks > Network mode. Choose an available option that includes 5G. Other phones may name or place this setting differently.
- Check restrictions that can affect data. Nothing’s guidance calls out roaming restrictions, data warning limits, and Battery Saver among settings to inspect. Names and availability vary by device.

Refresh the cellular connection
A temporary connection problem may clear with a brief network refresh or restart. These steps do not establish whether the underlying cause is coverage, the account, or the phone.

- Turn Airplane Mode on, wait at least 15 seconds, then turn it off. Apple recommends this sequence for cellular connection problems.
- Restart the phone and check whether it reconnects.
Apple’s instructions are in If you see SOS, No Service, or Searching on your iPhone or iPad.
Check the SIM or eSIM and carrier settings
For a physical SIM
If the phone does not detect the SIM or the connection remains unavailable, check that the card is seated correctly. On iPhone, Apple recommends reseating a physical SIM when applicable; a damaged or ill-fitting card should be replaced through the carrier. Samsung advises checking SIM status and asking the carrier about activation or SIM recognition if the line is not detected.

For an eSIM or a new carrier
Do not remove an eSIM as a troubleshooting shortcut. Ask the carrier to confirm that it is activated and provisioned. On iPhone, check that the intended cellular line is on, then open Settings > General > About to check for a carrier settings update. A new SIM or carrier may require updated carrier settings.

Update the phone before resetting network settings
Install any available operating-system update. If the phone still cannot connect, a network-settings reset may be an option, but understand what it removes before using it. Samsung says its network reset removes stored Wi-Fi networks and Bluetooth pairings, so you will need to reconnect those devices and networks afterward. Follow the reset instructions for your specific model; do not assume menu paths are identical across phones.
When to contact the carrier or seek service
If the phone shows SOS, No Service, or Searching, or the checks above do not restore service, contact the carrier first. The carrier can check information you cannot verify from the phone, including local outages, account status, device blocks, plan setup, coverage, and SIM or eSIM activation. Apple’s guidance for these status messages also directs users to check with their carrier.
If the carrier confirms that coverage, account, plan, and SIM or eSIM provisioning are in order, use the phone maker’s diagnostics or support. Arrange manufacturer or authorized service if the connection still fails after those checks. Google Pixel owners can also follow Google’s connectivity steps, including testing the SIM in another phone if one is available.
