Do not leave the same bright, fixed image on an OLED TV for hours at a time or repeat it day after day. Channel logos, game HUDs, paused screens, menus, news tickers and photos can contribute to image retention; in some cases, OLED image retention can become permanent. A brief trace that fades after the picture changes is not automatically burn-in, but lasting marks visible over other content warrant attention. Leave your TV’s built-in screen protections enabled and follow its model-specific care instructions.

What can cause OLED image retention?

The main risk is prolonged or repeated display of the same fixed elements. Manufacturers identify examples including channel logos, game HUDs, paused games, photos, on-screen menus, program guides, news tickers, app content, and black bars or reduced-size content. LG also lists prolonged vivid-mode use or very high brightness as possible contributors. These are risks associated with extended exposure, not evidence that one bright scene or brief pause will necessarily damage a panel.

To reduce repeated exposure, vary what you watch and avoid leaving a static screen up for long stretches. If you pause a game or video, switch content or turn the TV off rather than leaving the image displayed indefinitely. Sony’s examples and product applicability are described in its OLED image-retention guidance; LG’s general advice is in its image burn-in troubleshooting guide.

Image retention is not always permanent burn-in

Image retention is a trace of an earlier image that remains after the content changes. LG says it may fade after a moment or two. Burn-in lasts much longer and remains visible over other content. Sony warns that OLED image retention may become permanent, so a short-lived trace should not be treated as proof of permanent damage—but a mark that persists deserves attention.

Let the TV’s built-in protections work

Keep the screen saver and automatic pixel-cleaning features enabled, and do not interrupt them unnecessarily. LG describes screen savers that can activate after roughly two minutes without activity in specified no-signal or paused-video situations, as well as automatic pixel cleaning. The timing and behavior depend on the TV model and use; consult your manual rather than assuming every OLED uses the same schedule.

LG’s OLED55B3PSA protection document also recommends reducing pixel brightness for extended viewing and setting logo brightness adjustment high. Those labels and controls may differ across LG generations, and other brands use different menus. If you watch content with fixed graphics for long periods, look for the equivalent logo-dimming or static-image protection settings in your own TV’s picture or OLED-care menus.

Automatic cleaning versus manual panel refresh

Type Who initiates it When it runs What to do
Automatic pixel cleaning The TV According to the model’s programmed behavior and usage; LG describes automatic cleaning, but not one schedule that applies to every set. Leave the feature enabled and follow the model manual’s instructions about power and connection.
Manual pixel cleaning or panel refresh The owner When advised by the model-specific support instructions—not as routine maintenance by default. Sony’s cited help guide says to use manual panel refresh only when retention is particularly noticeable. Its once-a-year reference applies to the models covered by that guide; it warns that more frequent use may affect panel life. Check your exact model’s manual before starting a manual cycle.

For Sony models covered by its image-retention help guide, turn the TV off normally with the remote or TV power button. This is model-specific guidance, not a universal claim that disconnecting power will damage every OLED TV.

Clean an OLED screen without damaging it

  1. Turn the TV off and unplug it. Do this before cleaning, as LG advises in its screen-cleaning instructions.
  2. Wipe gently with a soft, clean microfiber cloth. Do not press hard, scratch the panel, or use a hard object on marks. Protect the screen from impact and pressure when moving the set.
  3. For stubborn dirt, check your model’s directions. LG’s cited guidance allows a cloth slightly dampened with water, followed by a dry cloth. Do not spray water directly onto the screen or let it run into the TV.
  4. Avoid unapproved chemicals and direct sprays. LG warns against alcohol, detergent and volatile chemicals under its guidance. Sony advises against unsuitable chemicals and says to verify that any commercial cleaner is suitable for TVs. Do not apply cleaner directly to the set.

A plain microfiber cloth is sufficient for the basic cleaning method described by the manufacturers; their guidance does not establish a need for OLED-branded cloths or special cleaning fluid.

When to check support for your exact model

  • A trace disappears shortly after you change content: monitor it and continue using the TV normally with its protections enabled.
  • A mark remains visible over different content: consult your model’s troubleshooting instructions before running any manual cleaning or refresh cycle.
  • You cannot find a protection setting or are unsure whether a refresh cycle is appropriate: use the TV’s exact model number to find its manual or manufacturer support page. Feature names and procedures vary by model and operating system.
