No—installing a newer BIOS or UEFI version is not automatically necessary. Update when the manufacturer’s release notes for your exact computer or motherboard identify a security fix, a problem you have, hardware support you need, or another relevant change. If none applies, you can usually wait rather than flash firmware simply because a newer version exists.
BIOS and UEFI are startup firmware that helps connect a computer’s hardware to its operating system. Manufacturers use both terms; follow the name and instructions used for your device.
Eight reasons a BIOS update may be worthwhile
These are eight practical categories drawn from ASUS and Dell guidance, not a numbered list published by either company. A particular update may address only one of them—or none that matter to your setup—so check the release notes for your exact model.
- Security fixes: The release addresses a vulnerability relevant to your computer. Give a manufacturer-designated critical or applicable security update priority.
- A fix for a known bug: The notes describe a defect you are experiencing.
- Improved stability: The update targets a system issue that affects reliability on your model.
- Compatibility with hardware or peripherals: You need support for a component or device identified in the update notes.
- Support for a processor or hardware configuration: The manufacturer explicitly adds support for the processor or configuration you plan to use.
- A firmware feature or setting: The release adds something you actually need.
- Performance optimization: The notes describe a performance change relevant to your system; an update does not guarantee a noticeable speed increase.
- Manufacturer-directed maintenance: The maker recommends the update for your specific computer, particularly when it is marked critical or addresses a defined issue.
ASUS lists stability, compatibility, known defects, hardware support and feature improvements as reasons to consider an update. Dell also cites security, bug fixes, stability, performance and features. Those lists describe possible purposes, not benefits guaranteed by every release. See ASUS’s BIOS update guidance and Dell’s BIOS and UEFI update guide.

When you can wait
If the computer works as needed and the model-specific release notes do not identify a relevant security issue, bug, hardware requirement or feature, there may be no immediate user-facing reason to update. This is not a reason to ignore an applicable critical security fix or a specific manufacturer instruction: check the official notes and guidance for your device before deciding.
ASUS recommends an official update when it aligns with your actual usage requirements. Dell recommends BIOS updates as part of system maintenance and calls out critical security updates and specific issues. These are vendor recommendations, not a guarantee that every system benefits from every new version.

Check these things before updating
- Confirm the exact model and current version. A computer’s model and its installed BIOS/UEFI version matter; firmware for a similar-looking model may not be interchangeable. Dell explains how to check the version in firmware setup or Windows System Information in its update guide.
- Use the manufacturer’s official support channel. Match the download to the exact model. ASUS describes using MyASUS or its official support site and checking the model name in its instructions.
- Read the release notes and procedure. Confirm what the version changes, whether it applies to your system and which update method the manufacturer specifies.
- Back up important data and save your work. Dell recommends a backup because an interruption can affect system stability.
- Keep the computer on AC power. Connect a laptop to its power adapter and leave it connected. Do not force a shutdown while the update is running; follow the device maker’s instructions.
- Prepare for device encryption. If BitLocker or another device-encryption feature is enabled, make sure you can access the recovery key. ASUS advises disabling encryption before updating and re-enabling it afterward; Dell advises suspending BitLocker and re-enabling it after completion. Follow the instructions for your exact device and Windows setup rather than assuming the steps are identical.
- Disconnect peripherals if instructed. Dell recommends disconnecting external devices; follow the specific update procedure for your computer.
Choose a manufacturer-supported update method
There is no single method for every computer. The available route depends on the manufacturer, model and operating system. Use only a method the maker supports for your device.
| Manufacturer guidance | Methods described | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| ASUS | MyASUS or a download from the official support site | Instructions vary by device architecture and model; verify the model and follow its specific steps. ASUS instructions. |
| Dell | SupportAssist, Windows Update, Dell Command | Update, a standalone utility, a USB flash drive, or over-the-air updates on applicable systems | Availability depends on the system and circumstances, including whether Windows is available. Follow Dell’s applicable procedure. Dell instructions. |
A USB flash drive is needed only if your manufacturer’s supported procedure calls for one. Dell includes USB as one option, particularly for Linux users or when Windows is unavailable; many other systems have different supported methods. Do not buy a USB drive just to update BIOS unless the instructions for your computer require or recommend that route.
