It installed as OS build 22621.3672 on 22H2 and 22631.3672 on 23H2, adding share-window, File Explorer, and account-setting features alongside a range of fixes. It is a historical update, not the current Windows 11 release; check Microsoft’s Windows 11 release information for current servicing status.
What is KB5037853?
Microsoft released KB5037853 on May 29, 2024, as a non-security cumulative update preview for all editions of Windows 11 versions 22H2 and 23H2. It updated 22H2 to build 22621.3672 and 23H2 to build 22631.3672. Microsoft says the 23H2 release includes the improvements in the 22H2 release. Microsoft’s KB5037853 release notes identify the update as a preview rather than a security release.
KB5037853 was not the upgrade that changed a device from 22H2 to 23H2. Eligible 22H2 devices moved to 23H2 using enablement package KB5027397; KB5037853 supplied that month’s cumulative improvements for each version.
What did KB5037853 add?
Share window and File Explorer
- Share window: Clicking outside the Windows share window no longer closes it; close it with the control in the upper-right corner. Microsoft marked this as a gradual rollout, so it might not have appeared immediately for every user.
- Address-bar breadcrumbs: Files can be dragged between the location segments, or breadcrumbs, in File Explorer’s address bar. This was also a gradual rollout feature.
Linked devices in Settings
Eligible Windows 11 Home and Pro users signed in with a Microsoft account can manage PCs and Xbox consoles from Settings > Accounts > Linked devices. The page offers adding a recovery email only if one has not already been added.

- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
Other additions listed for 22H2
- PC Manager for devices in China.
- Direct sharing from the Windows share window to specific Microsoft Teams channels and group chats for users signed in with a Microsoft Entra ID.
What did KB5037853 fix?
Microsoft’s release notes list fixes across Windows components. Several address input, display, and Explorer behavior:
- File Explorer could stop when users swiped from a screen edge after turning off edge swiping.
- Handwriting panels and touch keyboards could fail to appear when using a pen.
- A screen-sharing window could be hidden or show an empty title bar or client area in certain applications.
- Video could appear distorted while playing in a Chromium-based browser.
- Opening File Explorer could take up to two minutes after a network-share folder was pinned to Quick Access in a particular upgrade scenario from Windows 11 21H2 to 22H2.
Other listed fixes cover missing connect and disconnect options for Bluetooth Low Energy (LE) Audio headsets; an error code 0x80070520 when changing an account profile picture; and a USB-controller Share button that might not work with Game Bar.

- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
The notes also describe changes involving the Antimalware Scan Interface (AMSI), Enhanced Fast Reconnect with third-party Remote Desktop Protocol providers, encrypted-email credential prompts, a folder context-menu command used by a third-party sync service, completing the out-of-box experience under a specified local-account policy, and Unified Write Filter Windows Management Instrumentation shutdown and restart calls. These specific release-note changes should not be read as broader security or compatibility guarantees.
What problems did Microsoft document?
Microsoft’s notes recorded three known issues for the preview and named later updates as resolutions. These are historical reports, not evidence that the problems remain on a device running later cumulative updates.
Rank #3
- 14" diagonal, 1366x768 resolution, HD BrightView LED, Glossy NON-TOUCH Display
| Who or what was affected | Reported symptom | Microsoft-listed resolution |
|---|---|---|
| Users generally | The taskbar could temporarily glitch, stop responding, disappear, and reappear. Event Viewer could show Application Error Event ID 1000, naming Explorer.EXE and Taskbar.View.dll. | KB5039212 |
| IT administrators; mainly Parallels Desktop Windows virtual machines on Arm-based Macs | The update could fail during restart and roll back. Windows Update could show error 0x800f0845 for the ARM64 KB5037853 package. | KB5039212 |
| Enterprise users upgrading from Windows Pro to a valid Windows Enterprise subscription | The OS upgrade could fail; the LicenseAcquisition scheduled task could show Access denied (0x80070005). | KB5040527 |
Microsoft’s release note for the first issue states: “After installing this update, you might face issues using the taskbar.” If you are troubleshooting now, first check the installed Windows version and OS build, then compare the symptom and environment with Microsoft’s current release-health information rather than assuming a 2024 issue is still active.
Is KB5037853 still current?
No. Microsoft’s release history lists KB5037853 as a May 29, 2024 release and shows later servicing updates, including KB5039212 on June 11, 2024. The 22H2 build table is labeled “End of updates.” The release-history page lists later 23H2 releases through September 2026 at the time reflected in the available information; because servicing status can change, use Microsoft’s page for the latest status and guidance.

For troubleshooting or deciding whether an update applies, identify the Windows version (22H2 or 23H2), OS build, device architecture (x64 or ARM64), and any later cumulative updates already installed. Those details help distinguish a historical KB5037853 report from a current servicing issue.

Microsoft Update Catalog lists four packages: Windows 11 22H2 and 23H2, each in x64 and ARM64 variants. Check the device’s version and architecture before selecting a package in the Microsoft Update Catalog.
