To play Microsoft’s official Surf game, open Microsoft Edge and enter edge://surf in the address bar. Edge also offers the game when the browser is offline. The address is an Edge-specific route, however: it is not a way to launch Microsoft’s built-in game from Chrome, Firefox, or Safari. Other browsers may run independent, third-party ports, but those are not Microsoft’s official built-in version.
Open the official Surf game in Edge
- Launch Microsoft Edge.
- Enter
edge://surfin the address bar and press Enter. - Choose a mode and start playing. If Edge is offline, Microsoft says it provides a link to open the game.
Microsoft introduced Surf in Edge Stable starting with build 83.0.478.37 in May 2020. Its current feature page gives the same address-bar route: Play the Surf Game | Microsoft Edge. Microsoft cautions that feature availability and functionality can vary by device, market, and browser version.
Can you play it in Chrome, Firefox, or another browser?
Not by entering edge://surf. That is an internal Edge address, and Microsoft’s instructions describe it as an Edge route. Community projects have adapted Edge Surf code into separately hosted browser-playable versions. These are third-party ports, not Microsoft’s official built-in game, and their availability, compatibility, and similarity to the current Edge game depend on the project and its host.
For example, FiveStudio2023’s EdgeSurf repository describes modified files intended to run independently of Edge. The yell0wsuit Surf repository describes a version based on Edge v104-era code, with a Let’s Ski theme and progressive web app functionality. Those repository descriptions establish that ports exist; they do not guarantee that a particular hosted copy is available now or works in every browser or on every device. If you use a port, you are relying on its third-party host rather than Microsoft.

Choose a mode
Surf takes inspiration from the classic Windows game SkiFree. Steer through the water, avoid islands, surfers, and other obstacles, and use hearts to extend lives or boosts to gain speed. Microsoft documents three modes:

| Time Trial | Race a fixed course for speed; the same course allows repeatable time comparisons. |
| Zig Zag | Pass through gates consecutively to build a streak. |

Controls and accessibility settings
Microsoft lists keyboard, mouse, touch, and gamepad input, including Xbox, PlayStation, Switch Pro, and Xbox Adaptive Controller. A controller is optional; you can play with the other supported input methods. Microsoft also describes gamepad haptic feedback.
- High-visibility mode: Highlights object hit boxes.
- Reduced-speed mode: Lets you play at a slower speed.
- High scores: Tracked by mode and resettable from settings.

If Edge says the game is unavailable
On a work- or school-managed device, an administrator may have disabled Surf with the AllowSurfGame policy. Microsoft Learn says disabling that policy blocks play both offline and at edge://surf; enabling it or leaving it unconfigured allows play. The policy documentation, last updated May 22, 2026, lists Windows and macOS support from version 83, Android as unsupported for this policy, and iOS support from version 146. These are policy-support details, not a guarantee that the game is exposed identically on every listed device. See Microsoft’s AllowSurfGame policy documentation. If this is a managed device, contact its administrator rather than trying to change organization settings.
