You can install a custom ROM or Generic System Image (GSI) on a Galaxy S22-series phone only if its exact model can be bootloader-unlocked and the image and instructions match that variant. The community evidence here covers three international Exynos models—not every Snapdragon, carrier or regional S22. There is no safe, universal S22 flashing recipe.
First, identify your exact Galaxy S22 model
“Galaxy S22 Ultra” or “Snapdragon” is not enough to choose a ROM, recovery or firmware. Check the full model number in Settings or Download Mode, and note your region or carrier and installed firmware version. A maintainer’s guide must name your exact model and support the firmware you have.
| Phone | International Exynos model | Codename in the cited community device tree |
|---|---|---|
| Galaxy S22 | SM-S901B | r0s |
| Galaxy S22+ | SM-S906B | g0s |
| Galaxy S22 Ultra | SM-S908B | b0s |
These entries document specific international Exynos variants, not all phones sold under those names. In particular, a Team Win page for the Ultra codename b0q does not establish compatibility with the Exynos b0s model. Do not cross-flash files because the marketing name looks right.
Can your S22 bootloader be unlocked?
Unlockability is the first go/no-go check. Android’s GSI requirements include an unlocked bootloader, and a device-specific ROM also depends on a supported, unlockable variant. Unlock options can differ by model and region; the available documentation does not establish that every S22 can be unlocked. Do not assume a U.S. carrier Snapdragon model is eligible, and do not treat exploits as a normal installation method.
#1 Best Overall
- The S22 uses a flat (non‑curved) 6.1-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X display with adaptive 120 Hz refresh that dynamically adjusts between 48 – 120 Hz depending on content — which means smoother scrolling and better battery efficiency when high refresh isn’t needed.
- Its main rear camera features a 50 MP sensor with what Samsung calls “Tetra‑binning,” delivering stronger detail in bright light and surprisingly good low‑light photos compared to many older flagships.
- The build quality is designed to feel premium and durable: it uses an Armor Aluminum frame combined with Corning Gorilla Glass Victus+ on front and back, which gives better scratch and drop resistance — nice if you want a relatively compact but rugged flagship.
- For video content and editing, the S22 supports 8K recording — rare for a “smaller” flagship. That means you can shoot very high-resolution video, useful if you care about future‑proofing footage or cropping/editing later.
- The phone strikes a balance of compactness and performance — in a world of increasingly large phones, the S22 remains fairly pocket‑friendly while still packing the 4 nm flagship‑class chipset (Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 or Exynos 2200 depending on region) for smooth daily performance.
Before proceeding, check the exact model’s current manufacturer and maintainer instructions for whether unlocking is available. Unlocking erases user data, so make and verify a backup first.
Choose between a device-specific ROM and a GSI
| Option | What it is | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| Device-specific custom ROM | A system image built or ported for named hardware. Its maintainer may specify a particular firmware base, recovery, wipe and install sequence. | Exact model and firmware match; current instructions; known issues; and a model-specific way back to stock. |
| Generic System Image (GSI) | A generic AOSP system image intended for Treble-compatible devices. It does not include Samsung’s device customizations. | Unlocked bootloader, full Treble compliance, matching CPU architecture and cross-version compatibility, plus a verified device-specific flashing and restore method. |
For GSI eligibility, Android documents checking Treble with adb shell getprop ro.treble.enabled, checking cross-version compatibility through the vendor namespace’s namespace.default.isolated setting, and matching the image to the device’s CPU ABI. These checks do not by themselves prove that a particular image will boot or that every phone feature will work. AOSP also cautions that there is no single GSI flashing sequence for every device.

- This pre-owned product has been professionally inspected, tested and cleaned by Amazon qualified vendors.
- This product is in "Excellent condition". The screen and body show no signs of cosmetic damage visible from 12 inches away.
- This product will have a battery that exceeds 80% capacity relative to new.
A GSI is not an official device ROM. Because it lacks Samsung customizations, parts of the interface or support for newer hardware features may differ. Do not copy Pixel fastboot commands into an S22 guide unless a verified method for your exact device says to use them.
What S22 community support is established?
The ExtremeROM project’s supported-model list names SM-S901B, SM-S906B and SM-S908B. Its release listing includes S22-family packages dated August 22, 2025. GitHub marks the repository archived on January 3, 2026. This is historical evidence that the project covered those Exynos models; it does not show that builds are still maintained, work with current firmware or support other variants.

The project’s S22 installation section describes a particular workflow involving an unlocked bootloader, Odin, TWRP, formatting data and ADB sideload, and warns against dirty-flashing from other ports. Those are that project’s instructions, not a general S22 procedure. Do not follow an old guide unless its current model, build and firmware requirements still match your phone.
A community Exynos 2200 recovery device tree identifies the three international models above and reports data decryption and haptics as bugs. That is development information for the listed tree, not a compatibility guarantee for every ROM or recovery. No official LineageOS S22-family installation page is established here; a LineageOS guide for a different Galaxy model is not evidence of S22 support. Treat an S22 build as unofficial unless a current official device page says otherwise.

Prepare before changing the phone
- Back up your data. Bootloader unlocking and the cited ROM workflow wipe user data. Confirm that important files and account data can actually be restored.
- Understand the Knox consequence. Samsung documents the Knox Warranty Bit as a persistent hardware record of a non-approved configuration. Samsung says Knox-dependent features including Samsung Pay and Secure Folder stop working after it trips; returning to stock does not reset it.
- Keep the matching stock firmware. Obtain and preserve the correct original firmware for your exact model and region before altering partitions. Identify a verified, model-specific restore method and make sure you can access it before starting.
- Check the build’s current details. Confirm the exact supported model, firmware base, installation directions, checksums and known issues in the maintainer’s latest material. An archived page or old package is not proof of current compatibility.
Safe installation decision flow
- Record the device details: full model number, region or carrier, and installed firmware. If the maintainer does not list that exact combination, stop rather than adapting instructions for another S22.
- Confirm unlock eligibility: verify that the bootloader can be unlocked on your specific phone. Account for the data wipe and permanent Knox effects before deciding.
- Select the image type: choose a device-specific ROM only when its maintainer supports your model and firmware; choose a GSI only after its Treble, CPU ABI and compatibility checks pass.
- Secure a recovery route: back up your data, keep the matching stock firmware and verify the restore instructions for your model. Android warns that a noncompliant GSI flash can make a device nonbootable and that GSIs do not provide rollback.
- Follow only the matching current guide: use the maintainer’s instructions for that exact model and build. If no current, verifiable procedure exists, do not flash based on a recipe for a related model.
What may stop working?
Compatibility is build-specific. GSIs may behave differently from Samsung’s system, and the cited community recovery tree reports data-decryption and haptics issues. The available evidence does not establish the behavior of camera, fingerprint reader, VoLTE, banking apps, Play Integrity or battery life across S22 ROMs and GSIs. Check current reports for the exact build rather than assuming those features work.
