If Facebook shows a comment count but you cannot see the comments, that alone does not prove they were deleted. They may be lower in the thread’s ranking, held or filtered by moderation, unavailable under the post or group’s settings, or not loading properly. Start by checking the comment order, then determine whether the issue affects one thread or many unrelated posts.

Why comments can be missing

Several different mechanisms can produce the same symptom. A comment may still exist but be less visible in the order Facebook presents; a person or group’s controls may limit who can comment or what appears; or a technical problem may prevent the thread from loading. The comment count is a clue, not proof of which explanation applies.

Comment ranking and order

Facebook may rank comments rather than display every comment in simple chronological order. In a 2019 explanation of public-post comments, Meta said ranking can use integrity, survey, interaction and poster-control signals. Product Manager Justine Shen wrote that Facebook ranks comments on public posts from Pages and people with many followers because those posts tend to have many comments. That describes a ranking system for that context; it does not establish why a particular comment is absent today. Meta’s explanation of public-comment ranking

Group moderation and participation controls

Group admins can use automated moderation and temporarily limit how often selected members can comment. Public groups can also use participation approval controls. Depending on the group’s settings and moderation decisions, comments may be held, filtered, restricted or unavailable to a viewer. Meta introduced group-management tools in 2021, and Facebook Help Center materials describe group comment sorting, approval and activity controls. Meta’s announcement of group-management tools

Post settings or loading problems

Post and group permissions can affect who can participate or see content. Separately, a temporary app, browser, device or connection problem can leave comments unloaded. Those causes are not interchangeable: a thread-specific moderation setting will not be fixed by changing browsers, while a loading failure may appear differently across devices.

Check the scope before troubleshooting

First note whether the issue concerns one comment, one post or group, or multiple unrelated posts. Also check whether other viewers see the same thing. These comparisons help distinguish a thread-level control from an account-specific or technical problem; they do not, by themselves, identify the cause.

  • One comment: It may be ranked lower, unavailable under the post’s controls, or subject to moderation.
  • One post or group: Focus on that thread’s comment order, post permissions and group moderation.
  • Unrelated posts: Compare the experience across app, browser and device, and review account notices or restrictions.
  • Different viewers see different results: Ask the owner or group admin to check the relevant permissions and moderation controls.

What to try, in order

  1. Check the comment-order control. Open the thread’s available sorting options and try a broader or newer ordering option. Look for a control to load more comments. Labels and availability vary across Facebook’s app and website, so use the options currently shown for that post.
  2. Compare another viewer. If practical, ask someone else to open the same post. If they also cannot see the comments, the issue may be with the thread or its settings rather than only your app. If they can see them, consider account-specific visibility or a device/app issue.
  3. For a group-only issue, contact an admin or moderator. Ask whether comments are filtered or held, whether commenting is restricted, and whether participant approval or activity limits apply. The admin can check controls that ordinary members may not be able to inspect.
  4. For a problem across unrelated posts, test the technical basics. Reopen or update the app, compare Facebook in another browser or device, and check your connection. Review Facebook notifications for account restrictions or other relevant notices.
  5. Report a persistent issue to Facebook. If the problem remains after these comparisons, use Facebook’s available reporting option. Reporting does not guarantee that content will be restored or that the issue will be resolved immediately.

Do user reports confirm a Facebook outage?

No. Users have described seeing a comment count under a public-group post while no comments appear, even after changing the sort setting. Such reports can help identify a matching symptom, but anecdotes do not establish how widespread it is, what caused it, or whether Facebook is experiencing a current outage. Reports published in November 2025 do not verify an incident in October 2026. The available sources do not establish a current widespread outage.

Meta Engineering’s April 21, 2026 article about modernizing Facebook Groups Search concerns finding group content, not why comments may be invisible. It should not be treated as evidence for a comment-visibility cause. Meta Engineering’s article on Facebook Groups Search
