Work through these checks in order: confirm Windows is using the right output, check the connection, turn off audio enhancements, test another audio format, restart audio services, then update or reinstall the driver. Buzzing, crackling, or distorted sound can have several causes; no single setting is a guaranteed fix.
1. Confirm the output device and connection
First check whether Windows is sending sound to the speakers or headphones you are actually testing. If your PC has multiple outputs, such as built-in speakers, a headset, or a monitor, choose the intended one.
- Windows 11: Open Settings > System > Sound and check the selected device under Output.
- Windows 10: Select the intended device from the taskbar sound device list, or check it in Sound settings.
- Make sure the speaker or headphone plug, cable, or other connection is secure. If practical, test another available port or output device.
If the sound is clear through another output, that is a useful diagnostic observation, but it does not by itself identify which component is faulty. See Microsoft’s guidance for speaker and headphone audio issues.
2. Turn off audio enhancements
Enhancements can interfere with playback on some devices. Turn them off for the output you are testing, then play audio again before changing anything else.

- Windows 10: Right-click the volume icon, open Sounds, select the playback device, then open Properties > Enhancements. Select Disable all enhancements and test playback.
Labels can differ by device and Windows build. Microsoft’s distorted or crackling audio instructions cover both Windows versions.
3. Test a different audio format
If enhancements were not the cause, open the selected output device’s advanced or default-format settings. Choose a different format from the options available for that device, then test playback. Change only the format for this test so you can tell whether it affects the buzzing.

Microsoft does not name one sample rate or bit depth as the correct choice for every device. Use the available options as a test rather than assuming a particular format will fix the problem.
4. Restart Windows audio services
A service restart is another troubleshooting step; it does not establish that a service caused the noise.

- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers, right-click the audio device, and choose Update driver.
- Restart the PC and test the sound.
- If the problem remains, use Device Manager to uninstall the audio device, then install the latest driver from the PC or audio-device manufacturer’s website and restart.
Microsoft’s crackling-audio guide describes updating and reinstalling drivers. Its broader Windows audio troubleshooting guidance also discusses trying the generic Windows driver. If the noise began after a driver change, rolling back the audio driver may be a useful test.

6. If the buzzing began after a Windows update
Timing can help narrow the troubleshooting path, but it does not prove the update caused the problem. Microsoft recommends checking for pending Windows updates, updating the audio driver, or rolling the driver back when audio trouble starts after an update. See Microsoft’s update-related audio guidance.
If a driver rollback is unavailable or ineffective, Microsoft’s general guidance describes using a system restore point as a later option. It is not the first check to try.

Use the symptoms to narrow the cause
Compare what happens under different conditions. These observations can help decide what to test next, but they are not proof that a particular component has failed.
- Only one app buzzes: Check that app’s volume and selected output. If Windows system sounds are clear but one app is not, focus on that app’s settings as well as the audio driver.
- Only one output buzzes: Compare with another available output, such as built-in speakers versus headphones.
- The sound changes after a setting change: Note whether disabling enhancements or changing the format affected playback. Test one change at a time.
- The sound began after a Windows or driver update: Use the update-related steps above and note which change preceded the symptom.
Windows 11 also offers the Get Help audio troubleshooter, and Microsoft describes Get Help troubleshooting for Windows 10 in its general audio troubleshooting guide.
Windows 10 support status
Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. Microsoft says that after this date it no longer provides free Windows Update software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. This lifecycle change is important for security and support, but it is not itself an explanation for audio buzzing.
