To help AirPods stay put, first identify your model: only AirPods Pro have interchangeable ear tips. For AirPods Pro, try a comfortable tip size, insert each earbud gently, and check the seal while moving normally. Standard AirPods do not have removable silicone tips, so tip-sizing advice does not apply.
Fit AirPods Pro gently and check the seal
- Place the tip at the ear-canal opening. Insert it gently, rotate the stem toward your face, then press lightly while adjusting the angle. Apple’s guidance is to “Press gently to secure the fit, adjusting the rotation and angle of each of your AirPods.” Do not force an earbud or continue if it hurts. Apple’s AirPods User Guide explains the fit.
- Try another included size if needed. Medium tips come preinstalled, but a smaller or larger tip may fit better. A bud that feels loose or falls out with head movement may need a larger tip; a tip that feels compressed or uncomfortable may be too large. Your left and right ears may need different sizes.
- Wear them during ordinary movement. Apple recommends wearing AirPods Pro for 10 to 15 minutes during normal activity such as walking, then checking how they feel. A good fit should be comfortable and secure while providing an acoustic seal.
- Run the test for your generation. AirPods Pro 1 and 2 use the Ear Tip Fit Test. AirPods Pro 3 uses the Acoustic Seal Test with iOS or iPadOS 26 or later. The tests assess acoustic seal, sound quality and noise-cancellation fit; passing one does not guarantee the earbuds will stay in place for every person or activity.

When to replace AirPods Pro tips
If a tip is damaged or missing, buy replacement tips made for your exact AirPods Pro generation rather than assuming sizes are interchangeable. Apple’s AirPods Pro 2 replacement tips listing specifies four sizes and compatibility with Pro 2; it does not establish compatibility with other generations.
What if you have standard AirPods?
Standard AirPods do not offer removable tip sizes, so you cannot improve their fit by following Pro tip instructions. The sources cited here do not establish a particular hook, wing, foam tip or other retention accessory as a reliable recommendation across standard AirPods models. Check that any accessory is made for your exact model before using it.
