Open your phone’s voice-recorder app, tap Record, then pause or stop when you’re finished. The app and controls depend on your phone: Pixel devices use Google Recorder, Galaxy phones use Samsung Voice Recorder, and other Android phones may use a different app.
Record audio on a Pixel phone or tablet
- Open the Recorder app.
- Tap Record and speak or capture the sound.
- Tap Pause when you want to stop temporarily. Tap Resume to continue, or stop to save the recording. Tap its title to rename it.
Google’s instructions cover Pixel 3 and later phones and Pixel Tablet. A Pixel can continue recording while its screen is asleep, and Google says one recording can last up to 18 hours. These details apply to Google Recorder on supported Pixel devices, not to every Android phone or recording app. Google Pixel Recorder help.
Record audio on a Samsung Galaxy phone
- Open Voice Recorder.
- Start recording, then use the app’s stop or save control when you’re done.
- Find the saved recording in the app to play it back or use its available management and sharing options.
Samsung’s instructions and the app interface can vary by Galaxy model and software version. Samsung describes Voice Recorder features for recording, managing, editing, transcribing, and sharing audio. Follow Samsung’s Galaxy Voice Recorder guide for your device.
Find a recorder on another Android phone
Search your app list for Recorder, Voice Recorder, or Sound Recorder. If your phone does not have a suitable built-in app, you can look for a compatible recorder on Google Play. Check the publisher, requested permissions, features, and compatibility before installing it; Android manufacturers do not all provide the same recorder app.

Fix a recording that will not start or has no sound
Check that the recorder can use the microphone and that system-wide microphone access is on.
- Open Settings > Apps > [recorder app] > Permissions > Microphone and allow microphone access.
- Open the phone’s Privacy controls and check that microphone access is not disabled for the whole device.
Menu names can differ between Android versions and manufacturers. Google’s Android help identifies the microphone permission as “Record audio.” See Google’s Android app-permission guidance.

Find and share a Pixel recording
Pixel recordings stay on the phone or tablet unless you choose to back them up, share them, or copy them elsewhere. In Recorder, press and hold a recording and choose Share, then File, to send the audio or transcript to another app. Recorder can also create a shareable link with audience settings; anyone with a public link can access it, so choose the audience carefully. To record a screen video, swipe down twice, tap Screen recorder, select whether to record audio, and start. Stop from the Screen recorder notification. Controls vary by phone. See Android Help’s screen-recording instructions.

Call recording is not available on every Android phone. Google says non-Pixel devices need Android 9 or later; Pixel devices need Pixel 6 or later with Android 14 or later. The latest Phone app and a supported country or region are also required, and some carriers or devices may not support the feature. Google says participants are notified when recording starts and stops. Local law may require everyone’s consent, so check applicable rules and the current Phone app options before recording.
