To change how long your Android screen stays on when you are not using it, open Settings, find Screen timeout under Display, and choose a duration. Pixel phones use Settings > Display & touch > Screen timeout; Samsung Galaxy phones use Settings > Display > Screen timeout.
Change the screen timeout on your phone
Google Pixel
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & touch, then Screen timeout.
- Choose a duration. Google lists 15 seconds, 30 seconds, 1 minute, 2 minutes, 5 minutes, and 10 minutes. The available settings are documented in Google Pixel Help.
Samsung Galaxy
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display, then Screen timeout.
- Choose one of the durations shown on your phone. Samsung says the screens and settings can vary by model, software version, and wireless service provider; see Samsung Support Canada.
Other Android phones
Look in Settings > Display for Screen timeout. If you do not see it, search Settings for “Screen timeout.” Android steps can vary by device; if the setting still does not appear, use your phone maker’s support instructions. See Android Help.
Choose a timeout that suits how you use your phone
Screen timeout is the period of inactivity before the display turns off. A shorter duration switches the display off sooner and can help conserve battery. A longer duration can make reading less interruptive, but keeping the display on longer uses more battery. Google gives 30 seconds as one example of a short Pixel setting; Samsung also notes that longer screen-on time uses more battery. See Google Pixel Help and Samsung Support Canada.
Screen timeout is not the same as screen-lock timing
The screen timeout controls when the display turns off after inactivity; it does not necessarily control when the phone locks. Samsung explains that the lock screen may turn off sooner and that its lock-screen timeout may not be adjustable. For Samsung’s explanation, see Samsung Support Canada.

Keep the screen on while you are looking at it
If you want to avoid the display turning off while you read, check for a separate attention feature rather than increasing the timeout alone. Pixel calls this Screen attention and lists it for Pixel 4 and later. Supported Samsung devices and software versions may offer Keep screen on while viewing. These features respond to whether you are looking at the display; they do not change the timeout duration. See Google Pixel Help and Samsung Support Canada.
