To install Android 10, first check whether it is available for your exact phone model through the phone’s Settings app. Android updates are device-specific; there is no universal Android 10 download that is safe to install on every smartphone. Google advises owners of non-Pixel phones to check with their device manufacturer or carrier because update timing varies by device, manufacturer, and carrier. Google’s Android update guidance explains how to check.
1. Check your phone’s model and installed Android version
Before looking for Android 10, identify the exact phone make and model, along with its region and carrier variant. A firmware package for a similar-looking model may not be compatible.
- Open Settings.
- Tap About phone (or About tablet).
- Tap Android version and note the Android version, security update, and build number. Settings names can differ by manufacturer.
Older devices may not support newer Android versions, as Google notes in its Android Help.
2. Check for the official Android 10 update
- Open Settings and go to System > Software updates.
- Check for an update and follow the on-screen instructions if one is offered.
- If Android 10 is not offered, check update availability for your exact model and carrier or regional variant with the phone maker or carrier.
Some phones use different Settings labels. If the update check says your software is current, that does not establish that Android 10 is available for your model; confirm with the manufacturer or carrier instead of downloading firmware for a merely similar device.

3. Prepare before installing an offered update
- Connect to Wi-Fi. Android updates can be large and may take time to download and install.
- Charge the phone to at least 75%, following Google Android Help’s preparation advice.
- Back up important data as a precaution, particularly if you are considering any manual firmware process.
4. Should you install Android 10 manually?
Manual firmware installation is not a universal alternative to the Settings update. The available package and safe procedure depend on the exact device. Use only firmware and instructions published for that exact model and variant by its manufacturer. The Google options below apply to documented Pixel and Nexus devices, not to other Android phones.
Google Pixel and Nexus factory images
Google’s factory-image page provides device-specific images for restoring supported Pixel and Nexus devices. Installing a factory image erases all data, and unlocking the bootloader makes the device less secure. Do not use a factory image unless you have confirmed that it is intended for your exact device and understand the data-loss and security implications.

Google Pixel and Nexus full OTA packages
Google’s full OTA packages are another device-specific restoration route for supported Pixel and Nexus devices. Google describes this method as generally easier and safer than factory-image flashing: it can restore factory firmware without wiping data or unlocking the bootloader. It is still not a route for installing Android 10 on arbitrary phones.
Android Flash Tool
Android Flash Tool is for flashing prebuilt builds for development and testing, not a general consumer installer for any Android phone. Google lists Pixel 2 and newer and the DragonBoard RB3, HiKey 960, and HiKey development boards as supported devices. The workflow uses a USB connection to a workstation and includes OEM-unlocking instructions; the documentation does not establish a universal Android 10 installation procedure.

Why a universal Android 10 download does not exist
Android 10’s engineering documentation describes compatibility requirements and how device makers implement Android. For compatible implementations, update packages are signed and verified against a public key stored on the device. Those compatibility requirements and OTA architecture documentation do not provide one image that can be installed on every handset.
For most owners, the practical route is therefore to check for an update in Settings and confirm model-specific availability with the manufacturer or carrier. If your phone is not eligible for Android 10, do not force an installation with firmware intended for another device.
