To defer updates for one game, open it in your Steam Library and select Manage > Properties > Updates. Set Automatic updates to Only update this game when I launch it. This is a delay, not a permanent block: Steam says launching the game forces its pending update immediately.
Defer updates for a specific Steam game
- Open Library in the Steam client and select the game.
- On the game’s library page, choose Manage > Properties.
- Open Updates. Under Automatic updates, select Only update this game when I launch it.
Steam describes this option as temporarily disabling updates for that game. The update is deferred until you launch the game, at which point Steam forces it immediately. The setting therefore cannot keep a game permanently on its current version. Menu wording may vary slightly by operating system, client version, or localization; Steam’s English support guidance uses the labels above. Steam Support: Managing Steam Downloads & Updates.
Choose a different update policy
The same per-game Automatic updates menu also lists these choices:
- Always keep this game updated lets Steam keep the game updated automatically.
- High Priority – Always auto-update this game before others gives that game priority over other updates.
Steam also provides a per-game setting that controls whether other updates may download while you are playing. These options affect update behavior and priority; they do not make the update-on-launch choice a permanent block.

Schedule or manage downloads across Steam
For broader control over when downloads happen, open Steam > Settings > Downloads. Steam’s automatic-update time-window option limits scheduled automatic updates to hours you choose. Its example uses midnight to 8 a.m. local time. This is a general download schedule, not the same as deferring updates for one selected game; launching a game still forces its update immediately.
- Use the Download Manager to track and manage downloads and updates, or reorder queued downloads.
- Steam lets you override the schedule to download immediately.
- A bandwidth limit in Settings > Downloads constrains download speed; it does not disable updates.
See Steam Support’s guide to managing downloads and updates for the documented controls.
