It is a separate launch method: choosing Start > Power > Shut down follows the normal shutdown flow rather than opening the slide screen.
Open Slide to shut down with Run
- Press Windows+R to open the Run dialog. Microsoft lists Windows+R as the shortcut to open Run: Microsoft Support: Keyboard shortcuts in Windows.
- Type
slidetoshutdown. - Press Enter. The Slide to shut down screen appears.

Create a desktop shortcut
- Right-click an empty area of the desktop and select New > Shortcut.
- In the location field, enter
C:WindowsSystem32SlideToShutDown.exe, then select Next. - Enter a name such as Slide to shut down, then select Finish.
- Double-click the new shortcut whenever you want to open the slide screen.

Assign a keyboard shortcut to your shortcut
Windows does not provide a dedicated default hotkey for Slide to shut down in the cited instructions. You can try assigning a key combination to the desktop shortcut instead:

- Right-click the Slide to shut down shortcut and select Properties.
- Open the Shortcut tab and click the Shortcut key field.
- Press the key combination you want to use. Choose one Windows accepts and that does not conflict with a shortcut you rely on.
- Select Apply, then OK.
This is a shortcut-properties workflow, not a built-in Slide to shut down hotkey; whether a particular combination is accepted can depend on Windows behavior and the shortcut setup.
Slide to shut down or cancel
When the screen appears, drag the panel downward to shut down. To cancel, drag it upward, as described in Lenovo’s Windows 10/11 instructions: Lenovo Support. A touchscreen is not required; you can use a mouse to make the drag gesture.

Why Start’s Shut down option does not open the slide screen
The standard Windows 11 route is Start > Power > Shut down, which performs a normal shutdown. Microsoft documents that route in Shut down (turn off) your PC. A Microsoft Q&A moderator likewise explains that the Power menu does not launch the full-screen slide interface; use Run or the executable shortcut to open it separately. Microsoft Q&A
