First, check whether your Galaxy offers a way to unlock it with your previous screen lock. If not, you may need to erase and reset the device—but a factory reset deletes personal data, and Google account verification may still be required afterward. The right recovery option depends on your model, software version, region, and what accounts you can access.
Try the previous screen lock before erasing the device
If you recently changed your PIN, password, or pattern, check the lock screen for an option to use the previous lock method. Samsung Brazil says compatible devices running One UI 6.1 or later may offer this recovery option for up to 72 hours after the change. Availability depends on the device, software version, and timing; it is not available on every Galaxy. See Samsung Brazil’s instructions for details.
If the previous-lock option does not appear, or you cannot complete it, move on to the reset choices below. Do not assume that a reset will preserve data.
Choose a reset route

Remote erasure through Samsung Find or SmartThings Find
Samsung’s India guide describes selecting “Erase data” in SmartThings Find after signing in to the Samsung account associated with the device. Samsung warns that this permanently deletes data. Samsung’s U.S. lost-device guidance says remote functions require a Samsung account and remote controls to have been enabled; the listed functions also depend on the phone being on and connected to a network. The required settings cannot necessarily be enabled after you have lost access to the phone. Availability and features vary by market and device. Reset with the device buttons
If you cannot use a data-preserving recovery option or a supported remote service, a reset using the device buttons may be an option. The button sequence is not universal, so do not follow instructions for a different Galaxy model. Find the instructions for your model and region using Samsung UK’s reset guide or Samsung support for your market. Samsung notes that reset procedures and interface details vary by model and software version.
Settings-based factory reset instructions do not unlock a device when you cannot get past its lock screen. Samsung’s U.S. factory reset guide covers the available reset methods and explains that menus and screen layouts can differ.

Understand what a factory reset erases
A factory data reset returns the device to default settings and removes personal data stored on it. Photos, videos, documents, and other files that are not backed up may be lost. Samsung recommends saving important data before a reset. If you cannot unlock the phone, you may not be able to make a new backup first; do not count on recovering data after erasure.

A reset does not bypass ownership checks. On Android 5.1 and later, Google Factory Reset Protection may require the Google account previously registered on the device before setup can finish. Samsung says this can apply when a device is reset by a method other than through Settings. Some devices running Android 9 or later may also allow verification with a previously configured screen lock.

A Samsung account signed in on the device may also require its password to complete a reset through Settings. If you cannot access the required account or finish setup, contact Samsung support or a service center rather than trying to bypass verification. Samsung’s guidance is available in its factory reset instructions and forgotten-lock guide.

What to do if none of the options work
- Check the previous-lock option if you changed your PIN, password, or pattern recently.
- Before erasing, make sure you know the Google account previously used on the device and can access the Samsung account if required.
- Use only reset instructions matching your exact model and region; menu names and steps can vary.
- If the device will not reset or setup stops at account verification, contact Samsung support or visit a Samsung service center.
