To find an exact phrase in Gmail, put it in quotation marks in the search box—for example, "dinner and movie tonight"—then press Enter or select Search. You can add Gmail search operators to narrow the results by sender, subject, date, attachment, or location.
Search Gmail for an exact phrase
- Open Gmail and select the search box at the top of the page.
- Type the phrase inside quotation marks, keeping the words in the order you want to find. For example:
"dinner and movie tonight". - Press Enter or select Search to see matching conversations and messages. Google documents quotation marks as the operator for searching for an exact word or phrase: Refine searches in Gmail.
Narrow an exact-phrase search with operators
Combine a quoted phrase with a Gmail operator to limit where Gmail looks. These examples use documented operators; change the address, dates, and phrase to fit your search.
- Sender:
from:amy@example.com "invoice received" - Subject:
subject:"project update" - Date range:
after:2025/01/01 before:2025/02/01 "renewal notice" - Messages with attachments:
has:attachment "signed agreement" - Include Spam and Trash:
in:anywhere "booking confirmation"

Use Gmail’s visual search filters
On a computer
If you would rather fill in fields than type operators, select Show search options beside the search box. Gmail provides fields such as From, To, Subject, Has the words, Doesn’t have, Size, and Date within. You can enter your phrase in a relevant field and run the search. On mobile

What exact-phrase search does—and what Google does not specify
Quotation marks are Google’s documented way to search for an exact word or phrase. The reviewed Gmail guidance does not establish detailed rules for case sensitivity, punctuation normalization, or tokenization. Treat the quoted phrase as the documented search syntax, but do not assume it guarantees stricter matching behavior for those details.

Search with a screen reader
Google’s screen-reader guidance describes entering search criteria and pressing Enter, and notes that operators can refine and combine searches. You can use the same quoted phrase and operator syntax in Gmail’s search field. See Use Gmail with a screen reader.
