You can show or hide the bookmarks bar without deleting any saved bookmarks. The setting is in a different place in each browser: Chrome calls it the bookmarks bar, Edge calls it the Favorites bar, and Firefox calls it the Bookmarks Toolbar.
Show or hide the bookmarks bar in Chrome
These steps apply to Chrome on a computer. Google’s Chrome bookmarks help documents this menu route:
- Open Chrome’s More menu by clicking the three-dot button in the upper-right corner.
- Select Bookmarks and lists.
- Select Show bookmarks bar to toggle the bar on or off.
The menu item is a toggle: use it again to change the bar’s visibility. This changes whether the bar is displayed, not whether your bookmarks are saved.
Show or hide the Favorites bar in Edge
Edge lets you choose whether the Favorites bar appears everywhere, nowhere, or only on new tabs. Open Settings and more > Settings > Appearance. Under Toolbar, open the Favorites dropdown and choose a display mode. Microsoft’s Edge toolbar instructions describe these options:

Show or hide the Bookmarks Toolbar in Firefox
Firefox provides a toolbar setting through customization, as well as a shortcut from the tab bar. Mozilla’s Bookmarks Toolbar instructions explain both methods.
Use Customize Toolbar
- Open the Firefox menu.
- Select More tools > Customize Toolbar….
- At the bottom of the screen, open Toolbars.
- Choose the setting for the Bookmarks Toolbar to show or hide it.
Use the tab-bar shortcut
- Right-click a blank area of the tab bar.
- Find Bookmarks Toolbar in the menu.
- Choose the display setting you want.
Mozilla says the toolbar is shown by default on the New Tab page. If it appears there when you expected it to be hidden elsewhere, check the selected toolbar mode.
