To save a picture from a webpage on a Chromebook, right-click the image in Chrome and choose Save Image As. Choose a filename and folder if prompted, then select Save. Unless you changed Chrome’s download location, find the picture in the Downloads folder in the Files app.
How do I save a picture on my Chromebook?
- Open the webpage with the picture in Chrome.
- Right-click the picture with your mouse or touchpad. On a touchscreen, open the image’s context menu using the available touch gesture.
- Select Save Image As.
- In the save dialog, choose a folder and filename if needed, then select Save.
Chrome’s image-specific command is Save Image As. If a site prevents saving or the menu does not offer that option, a screenshot may be an alternative when you need only a copy of what is visible on screen.
Where did my downloaded picture go?
Open the Launcher, open the Files app, and select Downloads in the left panel. Chrome uses its default download location unless you have changed it; Chromebook Help identifies Downloads as the usual location for saved downloads. See Google’s guide to opening and saving files on a Chromebook.
How do I change where pictures download?
- In Chrome, select More (the three-dot menu), then Settings.
- Open Downloads.
- Select Change to choose a different default folder, or turn on Ask where to save each file before downloading to choose a destination each time.
The exact placement of these controls can shift between Chrome versions. Available destinations can include local folders and Google Drive.

Choose a place to keep the picture

Google warns that “Any file in the Downloads folder could get deleted if your Chromebook runs out of space.” To protect a picture you want to keep, move it from Downloads to a more permanent location such as My Drive. Follow Google’s instructions for keeping downloaded files from being deleted.
Saving a picture versus taking a screenshot
Save Image As downloads the image file from the webpage. A screenshot captures what is displayed on your screen, so it may include the page layout or other visible content rather than only the original picture. Use Chromebook’s Screen Capture when that screen view is what you need. Screenshots and recordings save to Downloads by default, and Screen Capture settings can change the destination; see Google’s screenshot and screen-recording instructions.
