For most Windows 11 home users, Microsoft Defender is the best place to start: it is built into Windows, so you do not need a separate antivirus subscription to get baseline protection. If you want a paid suite, Bitdefender Total Security is a strong current candidate: AV-TEST gave version 27.0 full marks across protection, performance, and usability in its June 2026 Windows 11 consumer test. That is a notable result in one lab period—not proof that it is best for every person or device.
This guide compares the available evidence rather than claiming hands-on testing. Independent labs test specific software versions under defined conditions; their results help with comparisons but cannot guarantee the outcome on an individual PC.
Do you need antivirus software if you use Windows Security or Microsoft Defender?
No separate purchase is required just to have antivirus protection on a Windows 11 home PC. Windows includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus, available through Windows Security. AV-Comparatives also evaluates Defender as a consumer product. This built-in baseline is distinct from other Microsoft-branded security subscriptions and enterprise products.
A paid suite may be worthwhile if you need features beyond the baseline, such as protection for several kinds of devices, parental controls, or centralized management. The value depends on the exact plan and whether you will use what it adds; paying for overlapping features does not automatically mean better protection for your household.

Which Windows 11 antivirus products performed well in recent tests?
AV-TEST’s March/April 2026 Windows 11 consumer test examined 14 security packages. Twelve scored at least 17.5 of 18 possible points, and eight detected all attackers in the lab’s detection table. AV-TEST says it challenged products with more than 12,000 malware samples. The lab awards up to six points apiece for protection, performance, and usability; a total of 17.5 or higher earns its TOP PRODUCT label. These figures describe that test period and its sample set, not the chance that any given user will be protected from every threat.
Bitdefender Total Security: strongest highlighted paid-suite candidate
In AV-TEST’s June 2026 Windows 11 consumer table, Bitdefender Total Security 27.0 scored 6/6 for protection, 6/6 for performance, and 6/6 for usability. That makes it a strong paid option to consider if you want a suite rather than relying only on Windows’ built-in antivirus. It does not establish a universal winner: the score applies to a particular version and test period, and a buyer should also consider features, cost, and their own devices.

Microsoft Defender and other tested suites
The same June 2026 AV-TEST table includes Microsoft Defender Antivirus (Consumer) 4.18 and Norton 360 versions among the evaluated products. Compare the complete test results rather than inferring a ranking from inclusion alone. Test scores can change with product updates and test conditions.
How should you compare antivirus test results?
- Protection: Look for the named lab, test month, product version, and score. A lab detection result is evidence from its test—not a promise of complete protection in everyday use.
- Performance: A scan or background protection can affect different workloads differently. Tom’s Guide reported differences among suites in its own game and network-speed tests; those results describe its test machine and scenarios, not a universal speed ranking.
- Usability and false alarms: Blocking legitimate files or producing confusing alerts can disrupt normal use. AV-TEST scores usability as a separate category alongside protection and performance.
- Test conditions: AV-Comparatives’ July–August 2026 real-world test used an updated Windows 11 Pro 64-bit system with up-to-date third-party applications. That matters for interpreting exploit-related results; an updated test platform is not the same as an unpatched PC.
Editorial comparisons may emphasize different features or use different test methods, so rankings can vary. Give most weight to clearly described evidence that matches your priorities rather than treating any one “best antivirus” list as definitive.

What does Bitdefender Total Security add, and what does it cost?
Bitdefender’s official US product page describes Total Security as covering Windows, macOS, Android, and iOS, with malware and ransomware protection, scam protection, a password manager, and a standard VPN allowance of 200 MB per day per device. Check the specific plan and platform before subscribing; advertised features and allowances may not apply identically across tiers or devices.

How to choose the right option for your PC
- Start with your actual need. If you want basic antivirus on one Windows 11 home PC, begin with Microsoft Defender rather than assuming you need a paid subscription.
- Identify any missing features. Consider a paid suite when you specifically need multi-device coverage, parental controls, or management tools. Check that the chosen tier includes the features you intend to use.
- Compare current evidence and total cost. Use dated lab results as one input, then check regional pricing and ongoing renewal terms. Do not select a product solely because of a first-year promotion or a single test score.
- Keep Windows and applications updated. AV-Comparatives states that keeping systems and third-party applications up to date and patched can dramatically decrease exploit risk. Antivirus software does not replace updates.

The product scores cited here come from AV-TEST and AV-Comparatives, while performance observations are attributed to Tom’s Guide’s stated tests. They are not tests performed for this article. Lab outcomes depend on product versions, sample sets, test systems, and dates; real devices and threats differ.
