A Windows 11 24H2 compatibility hold can prevent your PC from being offered the update while Microsoft addresses a known hardware or software issue. Start at Settings > Windows Update, check for updates, and follow the device-specific Learn More link if one appears. The right fix depends on the hold named for your PC; don’t force the upgrade with an installation tool while a safeguard is active.

Check whether your PC has a compatibility hold

Personal Windows 11 Home or Pro PC

  1. Open Start > Settings > Windows Update.
  2. Select Check for updates.
  3. If Windows says the upgrade is not ready for your device, open the accompanying Learn More link and follow the information for that safeguard.

Microsoft’s message may say that the upgrade is on its way and will appear on the Windows Update page when ready. A missing 24H2 offer by itself does not identify the cause, and a public issue page cannot diagnose the hold on an individual PC. Check the device’s message and Microsoft’s current Windows release health information.

Organization-managed PC

For a work or school device, ask your IT administrator to check the organization’s Windows Update for Business reporting and management tools, as well as Windows release health. The consumer Windows Update screen is not a complete enterprise diagnostic; Microsoft directs administrators to release health and the Microsoft 365 admin center for additional details.

What a compatibility hold means

A safeguard hold temporarily withholds a feature update from devices associated with a known compatibility issue. It is a protective measure, not evidence by itself that the PC is broken. The issue may involve a driver, hardware configuration, or application, and the remedy depends on the specific hold.

For example, Microsoft has warned that some NVIDIA display-driver versions could cause a loss of display after installing 24H2. Other issues recorded in Microsoft’s 24H2 history involved Dirac Audio and cridspapo.dll, camera object- or face-detection scenarios, and wallpaper customization applications. Microsoft recorded these as resolved in 2025; they are historical examples, not proof that any is currently blocking your PC. Check the current status and your own device’s message rather than applying an old fix to a different issue.

Fix the NVIDIA display-driver warning

If Windows displays the warning, “Your PC has a driver that isn’t ready for this version of Windows. A new version is available,” update the display driver before trying 24H2.

  1. Check Settings > Windows Update for an offered driver update and install it if available.
  2. If Windows Update does not offer one, open Device Manager, expand Display adapters, right-click the NVIDIA adapter, and choose Update driver > Search automatically for drivers.
  3. If neither route supplies a compatible driver, use the support channel for the PC or graphics-device manufacturer.
  4. After installing the compatible driver, return to Windows Update and wait for the feature update to be offered automatically.

Microsoft Support specifically cautions users with certain NVIDIA display adapters not to use the Update now button or Media Creation Tool until a new NVIDIA display driver is installed and Windows Update automatically offers Windows 11 24H2 or a later version. For this warning, do not bypass the hold by forcing the installation.

Use the remedy for the named hold

Do not assume that every compatibility hold is a driver problem or that one fix clears all holds. Follow the action Microsoft gives for the specific issue: it may involve installing a compatible driver, updating or contacting an application or device manufacturer, or waiting for Microsoft to remove the safeguard. If the message does not identify a fix, consult current release health or ask your administrator or device manufacturer for help.

Historical Intel Smart Sound Technology example

One resolved 24H2 issue affected certain PCs combining an Intel 11th Gen Core processor with Intel Smart Sound Technology Audio Controller driver IntcAudioBus.sys version 10.29.0.5152 or 10.30.0.5152. Microsoft identified driver version 10.30.00.5714 or later, or 10.29.00.5714 or later, as resolving versions. These details describe that historical issue, not a universal cause or current remedy for 24H2 holds. If a device covered by that guidance still had the hold 48 hours after the driver update, Microsoft advised contacting its manufacturer because a compatible driver might not have been developed for that hardware configuration.

Allow time for an offer to return

For some resolved holds, Microsoft says an eligible feature update may take up to 48 hours to appear after a compatible driver is installed, provided no other safeguard applies; restarting may help it appear sooner. This is guidance for applicable resolved issues, not a guarantee for every PC or hold. After following the specific remedy, check Windows Update again and avoid forcing the upgrade while the safeguard remains.

Check whether 24H2 is still the right target

Resolving an old 24H2 hold and choosing a currently supported Windows version are separate decisions. In its September 8, 2026 notice, Microsoft said Windows 11 24H2 Home and Pro would reach end of updates on October 13, 2026, while Enterprise and Education would remain supported until October 12, 2027. The Home and Pro date is imminent as of October 8, 2026. Check Microsoft’s latest servicing notice before deciding which version to install.

Microsoft describes 24H2 as a full OS swap. Its documented starting point for Windows 11 upgrades is version 23H2 or 22H2 with the May 2024 nonsecurity preview update or a later update installed. If your PC does not meet that starting point, the issue may be an upgrade-path prerequisite rather than a compatibility hold.
