The 2024 Xbox Series X refresh changed the console’s look and storage options, not the performance Xbox advertised. The white 1TB Digital Edition has no disc drive; the 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition adds storage and a distinctive finish. Xbox said both retained Series X speed and performance. The 2TB model’s buying context has since changed: Xbox announced in June 2026 that it would sunset the model, so availability now depends on current regional listings.
What’s different about the new Xbox Series X?
Xbox announced two Series X variants on June 9, 2024: a 1TB Digital Edition in Robot White and a 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition. The changes are to disc support, storage capacity, and exterior design—not to the performance Xbox said buyers should expect.
Xbox’s Head of Xbox Devices, Roanne Sones, described the new options as offering “the same speed and performance with more design, storage, and price options to fit your needs.” The 2TB edition was described as having “the same speed, performance and features of Xbox Series X, but with twice the storage and a unique design.” These are Xbox’s product claims, not independent performance test results.
| Series X variant | Disc support | Storage | Design | Announced US price |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1TB Digital Edition | All-digital; no physical-disc drive | 1TB SSD | Robot White | $449.99 US estimated retail price in the 2024 announcement |
| 2TB Galaxy Black Special Edition | Disc support is not specified in the cited 2024 announcement | 2TB SSD | Celestial black with silver, grey, and green detail; matching controller included | $599.99 US estimated retail price in the 2024 announcement |
Xbox said the 2024 options would be available in select markets. The prices in the table are launch-era announced US estimated retail prices, not current checkout prices. Games were sold separately.

Does the white Xbox Series X have a disc drive?
No. Xbox explicitly identifies the Robot White 1TB Series X Digital Edition as all-digital, so it is not the version to choose if you need to play physical game discs. Its listed 1TB SSD capacity is half the 2TB Galaxy Black edition’s listed capacity.
Is the new Xbox Series X more powerful?
Xbox said the new Series X variants had the same speed and performance as Series X; the announcement presented them as design and storage alternatives rather than a more powerful generation. The original platform’s published specifications include an 8-core custom Zen 2 CPU, a custom RDNA 2 GPU rated at 12 TFLOPS, 16GB GDDR6 memory, a custom 1TB NVMe SSD, and a 4K UHD Blu-ray drive. Those are baseline specifications published in 2020, not a new specification sheet for the 2024 refresh.

Xbox’s stated platform target was 4K at 60 FPS, with support up to 120 FPS. That does not mean every game runs at 4K/120 FPS: resolution and frame rate depend on the game and supported display. Xbox described the Digital Edition as supporting up to 4K resolution.
Is the 2TB Galaxy Black Xbox Series X still available?
Availability is now region- and retailer-dependent. On June 25, 2026, Xbox announced that it would sunset its 2TB model. That announcement does not establish whether stock remains at a particular retailer or in a particular region, so check live listings before deciding to buy. Treat the $599.99 US figure as the 2024 announced estimated retail price, not a current price.

The same June 2026 announcement said worldwide console price changes would take effect August 1, 2026: increases of US$100 for 512GB console models and US$150 for 1TB models. Those announced adjustments do not tell you the current price of a specific Series X listing; verify the regional listing and the date you check it.

In January 2025, Xbox said its repairability program was expanding to the three new Series X|S variants. It named participating uBreakiFix by Asurion locations in the United States as an authorized in-person repair route and said replacement components were available through Microsoft Store, with console parts through Microsoft’s Repair Hub on iFixit. Participation and model compatibility should be confirmed with the local store or current parts listing.
