There is no universal F key for screenshots. The shortcut depends on your operating system: Windows uses Print Screen or Windows + Shift + S, Mac uses keyboard combinations with Shift and Command, and Chromebooks usually use the Show windows key. F5 is only a Chromebook fallback for an external keyboard that lacks Show windows.
Screenshot shortcuts at a glance
| Device | Whole screen | Partial area or window | Where an F key fits |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows 10/11 | Windows logo key + PrtScn may capture the screen, depending on the device. | Windows logo key + Shift + S opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. | No F key is the standard shortcut. | Mac | Shift-Command-3. | Shift-Command-4 selects an area; then press Space to capture a window. | No F key is used. Shift-Command-5 opens Screenshot in macOS Mojave 10.14 or later. Apple’s Mac screenshot instructions. |

How to take a screenshot on Windows
Capture with Print Screen
Press Windows logo key + PrtScn to take a screenshot on supported Windows devices. The exact behavior of the PrtScn key can vary with device and settings; it may open screen snipping instead. If the keyboard has no PrtScn key, Microsoft lists Fn + Windows logo key + Space Bar as an alternative.
Select part of the screen
Press Windows logo key + Shift + S to open the Snipping Tool capture overlay, then choose the area to capture. This is the more direct option when you want a selected region rather than the whole screen.
How to take a screenshot on Mac
- Whole screen: Press Shift-Command-3.
- Selected area: Press Shift-Command-4, then select the area.
- Window: Press Shift-Command-4, then press Space and select the window.
- Screenshot controls: Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot app. This shortcut is available in macOS Mojave 10.14 or later.
By default, Mac screenshots are saved to the desktop. Apple’s Screenshot options let you change the save location. See Apple’s instructions for taking a screenshot on Mac.

How to take a screenshot on Chromebook
Press Ctrl + Show windows for a screenshot, or Shift + Ctrl + Show windows for a partial screenshot. Some Chromebooks have a dedicated Screenshot key you can press instead. Google documents Ctrl + Shift + F5 only as a fallback when an external keyboard does not have the Show windows key; it is not a general-purpose screenshot shortcut. See Google’s Chromebook screenshot instructions and Chromebook keyboard shortcuts.
If the shortcut does not work
- Check the operating system first. Windows, Mac, and ChromeOS use different screenshot shortcuts.
- Look for the relevant key on the keyboard. On Windows, check for PrtScn; on Chromebook, check for Show windows or a dedicated Screenshot key.
- On an external Chromebook keyboard, use Ctrl + Shift + F5 only if Show windows is missing.
- On Windows, try Windows logo key + Shift + S if the Print Screen behavior is unclear or does not give you the capture you want.
What about Linux?
There is no single Linux shortcut established here: screenshot keys can depend on the desktop environment. Check the shortcut settings or help for the specific Linux desktop rather than assuming the Windows, Mac, or Chromebook combinations apply.
