To install an APK on Android, download or locate the file, open it, and follow the installer prompts. If Android asks for permission, allow the specific browser or file app you used to install unknown apps. You can also install an APK from a computer with Android Debug Bridge (ADB), a more technical option for developers and experienced users.
Choose an installation method

Android’s installation prompts and settings labels vary by version and manufacturer. These methods change how you start installation, not the safety of the app: use a source you trust and take warnings seriously.
Before installing: choose a source you trust
An APK is an Android app package. Google recommends Google Play, while noting that apps can also come from other sources. Google warns that apps from unknown sources can put your device or personal information at risk. If the app is not available through Play, use the developer’s official distribution channel when possible, and verify that the app and developer are the ones you intended. Google’s guidance on protecting your device explains the risks.
Keep Google Play Protect enabled. It checks apps during installation and periodically afterward, and may warn about, disable, or remove an app it considers harmful. A warning is a reason to stop and verify the source—not a prompt to bypass protection automatically. Google also says Play Protect may block an unverified app that requests sensitive permissions commonly targeted by financial-fraud scams. Learn how Play Protect works.

Method 1: Download and open the APK on your phone
- Download the APK using your phone’s browser from Google Play, if available, or a trusted developer source.
- Open the downloaded file from the browser’s download notification or the Downloads app.
- If Android blocks the installation, tap the prompt to open the setting for allowing that source to install apps. Allow your browser to install unknown apps, then return to the APK.
- Review the installer screen, including the app name and requested access, and tap Install only if you trust the app.
- When finished, turn off the browser’s install permission if you do not expect to use it again.
On Android 8.0 (API 26) and later, permission is granted per source: allowing one browser does not automatically allow another app to install APKs. Android documents this as the Install unknown apps permission, which users can change later.
Method 2: Open an APK saved in Downloads or a file manager
- Open the Downloads app or your phone’s file manager and find the APK.
- Tap the file and follow the installer prompts.
- If Android asks for permission, allow the app that opened the APK—such as the file manager—to install unknown apps. Return to the file and try again.
On Pixel phones, Google’s documented path is Settings > Apps > Special app access > Install unknown apps. Other Android devices may use different menu names or locations. If you cannot find the setting, search Settings for Install unknown apps. Google’s Pixel help page documents the Pixel-specific path.

Method 3: Install the APK with ADB from a computer
ADB is Google’s command-line tool for communicating with an Android device or emulator. Use this route if you are comfortable with developer settings and command-line instructions. You will need Google’s Android Platform Tools, a device with USB debugging enabled, and a computer connection that the device authorizes. A USB data cable may be needed depending on your computer and device; this is not required for either on-phone method.
- Download and set up Android SDK Platform Tools on the computer.
- On the Android device, enable Developer options and then USB debugging. The exact steps differ by device. Connect the device to the computer and approve its authorization prompt.
- Open a terminal or command prompt in the Platform Tools folder and run
adb install path_to_apk, replacingpath_to_apkwith the APK’s actual file path. - Wait for ADB to report success. If it reports an error, confirm the file path, device authorization, and that the package is a single installable APK.
Android’s ADB documentation confirms the install command for a connected device or emulator. Some apps are distributed as split APKs rather than one APK file; for a set of split files, use ADB’s install-multiple command as documented there. A single adb install command will not install a collection of split files as one app. Google’s physical-device setup instructions cover connecting a device over USB.

Troubleshoot common installation problems
The installer says installation is blocked or permission is missing
On Android 8.0 and later, check permission for the app that opened the APK. If you downloaded it in one browser but opened it using a file manager, the permission may need to be granted to the file manager instead. On Android 7.1.1 and earlier, the older, broader Unknown sources setting or a one-time prompt may apply. The Android version and manufacturer determine the exact wording.
Play Protect warns about or blocks the app
Do not treat the warning as a routine installation step. Stop and verify the developer, source, and reason for the warning. Play Protect can warn, disable, or remove apps it considers harmful; some apps requesting sensitive permissions may be blocked when they are unverified. Advanced Protection prevents an outside-Play installation
Google says that on devices enrolled in Advanced Protection, newly installed apps from most sources outside Google Play are blocked. Its listed exceptions include ADB and preinstalled app stores. This restriction applies to devices in that protection state, not to every Android user. Google’s Advanced Protection information describes the scope.
An unverified developer or private app is involved
Some developer-verification requirements are scoped to particular situations; they do not mean that every APK on every device follows one universal process. Google’s help page describes an advanced process for allowing apps from unverified developers that includes a 24-hour delay. Separately, Google says that from September 30, 2026, private apps on unmanaged, Play Protect-certified devices must be registered to a verified developer to remain installable and receive updates. That requirement exempts fully managed devices and Work Profiles under Google’s stated policy.
