What’s actually slowing this PC down?

To stop an app from opening automatically when you sign in to Windows 11, go to Start > Settings > Apps > Startup and switch the app Off. Or open Task Manager > Startup apps, select the app, and choose Disable. Either action stops automatic startup; it does not uninstall the app.
Turn off startup apps in Settings
- Select Start > Settings > Apps > Startup.
- Find the app you want to stop from opening automatically.
- Switch its toggle to Off.
The change applies when you sign in to Windows. You can return to the same page and switch the app back On if you want it to start automatically again. See Microsoft Support’s instructions for configuring startup apps.
Use Task Manager to see startup impact
- Right-click Start and select Task Manager.
- Select Startup apps.
- Select the app and choose Disable. To reverse the change, select it and choose Enable.
Settings and Task Manager show the same list of startup apps. Task Manager adds an impact label, which can help you decide which enabled entries to review first. Microsoft Support defines the labels as follows:
- None: the startup app is disabled.
- Not Measured: the app is enabled, but measurement data is unavailable.
- Low Impact: total CPU use is under 300 milliseconds and total disk use is under 292 kilobytes.
- Medium Impact: total CPU use is under 1 second but over 300 milliseconds, or total disk use is under 3 megabytes but over 292 kilobytes.
- High Impact: total CPU use is over 1 second or total disk use is over 3 megabytes.
These are the thresholds in Microsoft’s support guidance; the page does not state when it was published. Microsoft says unnecessary startup apps can affect startup speed and overall performance, but it does not give a guaranteed boot-time improvement for an individual PC. See Microsoft’s Windows performance tips.

If the app is missing from the startup list
Microsoft says apps registered with a Windows startup task can be configured in Settings or Task Manager. A shortcut-based entry may instead be in a Startup folder. To check those folders:
- Open the Run dialog, enter
shell:appsfolder, and leave the resulting File Explorer window open. - Open a second Run dialog. Enter
shell:startupto inspect startup shortcuts for your account, orshell:common startupto inspect shortcuts for all users of the device. - If you find the relevant shortcut, delete the shortcut from that folder to stop that shortcut from launching at sign-in.
The current-user folder is %userprofile%AppDataRoamingMicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup; the all-users folder is %ProgramData%MicrosoftWindowsStart MenuProgramsStartup. Microsoft describes these folders and the startup-task distinction in its startup-app instructions.

When Settings says “We couldn’t find this app”
Microsoft lists several possible causes: the app may be on a removable or network drive, its path may no longer exist, or the app may already have been uninstalled. Check whether the drive is available and whether the app is still installed before trying to change its startup entry.
Registry entries are an advanced troubleshooting step
Microsoft also lists Run registry locations for startup applications: HKLMSoftwareWow6432NodeMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun, HKLMSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun, and HKCUSoftwareMicrosoftWindowsCurrentVersionRun. Registry changes can have unintended consequences. Microsoft advises backing up the registry before making changes, so use the Settings, Task Manager, or Startup folder methods first unless you know how to safely inspect and edit the registry.

Disable startup or uninstall the app?
Turning an app Off in Settings or choosing Disable in Task Manager leaves it installed; it only prevents it from opening automatically at sign-in. If you want to remove the app, use Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find the app, select More > Uninstall, and follow the prompts. Some built-in apps cannot be uninstalled through Settings. See Microsoft’s Windows app uninstall instructions.
