If your MacBook shows error −50 while copying or moving files, start by checking the file, the destination’s free space, and—if you’re using an external drive—its format and write access. Error −50 is a symptom, not a confirmed diagnosis: Apple’s general file-transfer guidance covers these checks, but does not identify one universal cause for the code.

What MacBook error −50 means

People commonly describe the message as “The operation can’t be completed because an unexpected error occurred (error code -50)” when Finder fails to transfer a file. The available Apple guidance addresses failed copy and move operations generally; it does not define error −50 or establish that every instance has the same cause. Avoid assuming the code proves a drive is failing, a filename is invalid, or permissions are wrong.

Also note the minus sign: a report of “error code 50” without it may refer to a different issue. Record the exact message and whether the failed action was copying, moving, deleting, or writing to a particular destination.

Work through these checks in order

  1. Check the file. Close any app that may currently have the file open. In Finder, select the item and choose File > Get Info; if Locked is selected, clear it if you are authorized to change the file. Apple’s Mac user guide lists an open or locked item among the checks for a failed move or copy.
  2. Check the destination’s space. Confirm the destination has enough available storage for the item. If you are copying to an external disk, check its available space in Finder’s Get Info window.
  3. Check the external drive’s format and write access. Apple says Mac can read NTFS-formatted drives but cannot write to them by default. Apple’s copy-and-move guidance names APFS, Mac OS Extended, and exFAT as formats for external drives. Check the disk’s format in Disk Utility or its Finder Get Info window. Do not erase or reformat it as a quick fix: formatting can remove the data on the drive. First secure any files you need.
  4. Isolate the connection or destination. If the transfer uses an external drive, eject it, reconnect it, and try a different compatible cable or port if available. Test with a small, unimportant file, then try another destination. These are troubleshooting checks, not guaranteed error −50 cures.
  5. Protect data before further repair attempts. If important files are on a disk that is behaving unreliably, back them up to a separate destination before extensive troubleshooting. A backup drive provides a place to preserve data; it does not itself repair error −50.
  6. Consider a general disk check. A secondary troubleshooting source suggests running Disk Utility First Aid on the affected drive. This is a general disk check, not an Apple-confirmed, error −50-specific fix. If the drive contains important data, prioritize a backup before repair attempts.
  7. Escalate if the error persists. If the disk disconnects, behaves unreliably, or the basic checks do not help, contact Apple Support or a qualified service provider. There is no established error-specific software procedure that guarantees a fix.

Use the results to narrow down the problem

Change one factor at a time and note what happens. If only one file fails, the issue may be limited to that item; if multiple files fail only on one destination, focus on that destination and its format, space, and write access. If the same files work on another destination, that comparison can help localize the failure. These patterns are clues, not proof of a single cause.

  • One file or many? Try another nonessential file to see whether the problem follows a particular item.
  • One destination or several? Test a different folder or drive to see whether the failure is destination-specific.
  • External drive connection? Reconnection or a different cable or port can help determine whether the connection is involved.

Apple’s general advice for a failed move or copy is to check whether the item is open or locked, confirm there is enough destination space, and check the drive format and permissions. The checks above help apply that advice without treating the error code as a diagnosis.
