To move the Windows 11 taskbar to the left or right edge, first check Settings > Personalization > Taskbar > Taskbar behaviors for a Taskbar position option. It is not established that this option is available on every generally released Windows 11 build. If it is missing, Windows’ built-in alignment control only moves the icons; it does not make the taskbar vertical.
Check whether Windows offers taskbar positioning
- Open Settings.
- Select Personalization > Taskbar.
- Expand Taskbar behaviors.
- Look for Taskbar position. If available, choose the left or right edge and apply the setting shown in Windows.
Microsoft announced on May 15, 2026 that positioning the taskbar on the top, bottom, left, or right was rolling out to Windows Insiders in the Experimental channel. That announcement documents a preview rollout; it does not confirm that the setting has reached every generally available Windows 11 version or specify which stable builds include it. Microsoft’s Windows Insider announcement places the control under Taskbar behaviors.
Taskbar alignment is not taskbar position
Windows 11’s Taskbar alignment setting controls whether the taskbar icons sit in the center or at the left of the taskbar. It does not rotate or dock the bar along the left or right edge of the screen. Microsoft’s Customize the Taskbar in Windows page says the Windows 11 settings do not provide a built-in control to move the taskbar to the top or side. The page also contains separate Windows 10 guidance about taskbar location; those instructions do not apply to Windows 11.
If Taskbar position is missing
If there is no Taskbar position option, your installed Windows build may not include the feature. Microsoft’s cited announcement described it for Experimental-channel Insiders, so do not assume that enrolling in a preview channel is necessary or that the setting is available in stable Windows; the sources do not establish its general-release status as of October 8, 2026. Avoid changing unrelated alignment options expecting them to create a vertical taskbar.

Third-party alternatives
Start11
Stardock announced that Start11 v2.5 supports docking the Windows 11 taskbar on the left or right, including independent locations on multi-monitor desktops. This is a third-party customization, not a Windows setting. Before installing, check the current Start11 version, compatibility with your Windows updates, and its current price and support terms; Stardock’s January 2025 announcement does not establish those current details. Stardock’s Start11 v2.5 announcement reported a starting permanent-license price of $9.99 at that time, which should not be treated as today’s price.
ExplorerPatcher
A 2023 Microsoft Learn Q&A thread includes a community recommendation for ExplorerPatcher, but it is not an official Microsoft solution or a current compatibility guarantee. The thread also recounts an Explorer startup problem after a Windows update. Consider that anecdotal risk before using it, and check current project information and Windows-update compatibility independently. Read the Q&A thread.

Limitations reported for the Insider preview
When Microsoft announced alternate taskbar positions for Experimental-channel Insiders in May 2026, it said those positions did not yet support auto-hide or the tablet-optimized taskbar. Microsoft also said touch gestures were in progress, and the search box appeared as an icon. Those are limitations described for that preview at announcement time; they do not establish the behavior of later releases or third-party tools.
