You can reduce Firefox’s content processes by lowering the Content process limit, but you cannot use that setting to combine every Firefox component into one operating-system process. To check what is actually using resources first, open Firefox’s Process Manager at about:processes.
What Firefox’s Task Manager shows
Firefox’s built-in Task Manager is called Process Manager. Open it from the Firefox menu with More Tools → Task Manager, or type about:processes in the address bar. It lists process names and approximate memory and CPU use, which can help identify busy tabs, extensions, or other processes. Mozilla’s Task Manager guide explains the page and its resource information.
The entries are not a count of open Firefox windows. Multiple processes can serve different browser functions, so seeing several Firefox entries in your operating system’s Task Manager does not by itself mean there is a problem.
Check for a resource-heavy tab or extension first
- Open Firefox’s Process Manager using More Tools → Task Manager or
about:processes. - Sort the list by Memory or CPU to bring the heaviest entries into view.
- If a tab you do not need is using substantial resources, close it. Mozilla also documents actions in the Process Manager to close a tab or unload its contents. See Mozilla’s instructions for using Task Manager.
Mozilla’s troubleshooting guidance recommends inspecting the Process Manager and closing tabs you do not need when Firefox is using too much memory or CPU. See Mozilla’s memory and CPU troubleshooting steps. A high process count alone is not a reliable diagnosis.

Lower Firefox’s content process limit
If you specifically want fewer content processes, Firefox exposes a Content process limit setting in Performance settings after you turn off the recommended performance settings.
- Open the Firefox menu and choose Settings.
- On the General page, scroll to Performance.
- Clear Use recommended performance settings to reveal the manual controls.
- Use the Content process limit menu to choose a lower value. Mozilla describes setting it to 1 as effectively turning off multiprocess; its help article warns that this may significantly affect Firefox performance. Read Mozilla’s explanation of the setting and its trade-off.
This setting controls content processes, not every Firefox process. Mozilla Support community guidance notes that other process types can remain, so selecting 1 does not make Firefox a single-process application in the operating system’s Task Manager. See the community answer.

Why not disable multiprocess with an old preference?
Older forum posts may suggest changing preferences such as browser.tabs.remote.autostart. Those instructions concern older Firefox versions and are not current official guidance. Use the Performance setting above if you choose to reduce the content process limit.
