The setting may not appear on every PC. If you instead see Manage BitLocker, that is a separate control, available in Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education—not Home. Before changing encryption, make sure you can access the drive’s recovery key.
First identify the encryption control on your PC
Windows has two related but distinct controls. Device Encryption is the streamlined Settings control and can be available across Windows editions, including Home, on supported devices. Microsoft describes it as automatically enabling BitLocker encryption for the operating-system and fixed drives. The separate BitLocker Drive Encryption Control Panel interface is available in Windows Pro, Enterprise, and Education, but not Home.
- To find Device Encryption: Open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption. You can also search Windows for “Device encryption.”
- To find the separate BitLocker interface: Search Start for Manage BitLocker.
Microsoft’s descriptions of the controls and edition availability are in its Device Encryption in Windows and BitLocker Drive Encryption guidance.
Before turning encryption off, secure the recovery key
A BitLocker recovery key is a 48-digit number Windows may request if it cannot automatically unlock an encrypted drive. Locate the key for the device and make sure you can access it before changing settings or troubleshooting. Microsoft cannot retrieve, provide, or recreate a lost key.

Depending on how the device is configured, a backup may be in a Microsoft account, a work or school account, a text file, a printout, or on a USB drive. A USB drive is optional; it is not required to turn off encryption. Keep any USB backup or printout separate from the computer, not stored with it. See Microsoft’s instructions to back up a BitLocker recovery key and find your BitLocker recovery key.
Turn off Device Encryption in Settings
- Sign in to Windows using an administrator account.
- Open Settings > Privacy & security > Device encryption.
- Switch Device encryption off and follow any prompts Windows displays.
- When Windows has completed the change, return to the same page and check the displayed setting.
Microsoft documents the on/off control on this Settings page in its instructions for enabling Device Encryption; using that same toggle to switch it off is the direct way to disable it. The cited guidance does not describe a separate disable walkthrough.

If you use Manage BitLocker instead
On a Pro, Enterprise, or Education PC, open Manage BitLocker from Start search and inspect the controls for the drive you intend to change. The interface is separate from the Device Encryption toggle. Microsoft’s consumer-facing overview explains how to access BitLocker Drive Encryption, but does not provide a complete consumer walkthrough for turning it off. Do not assume that suspending protection is the same as decrypting a drive; if you need a temporary maintenance change or the device is managed, use the procedure provided for that specific situation or ask your IT administrator.
If the setting or control is missing
Device Encryption does not appear in Settings
Check that your Windows account is an administrator. Microsoft says the page may also be absent because the device does not support Device Encryption. To review support information, open System Information and look for Automatic Device Encryption Support or Device Encryption Support. The status may identify issues such as TPM usability, an unconfigured Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE), or unsupported PCR7 binding. These are availability checks, not instructions for disabling encryption.

Manage BitLocker does not appear
Check the Windows edition. Microsoft’s Control Panel BitLocker interface is available in Pro, Enterprise, and Education, not Home. A missing Control Panel option on Home does not by itself mean the device is unencrypted; check Settings for Device Encryption instead.
The PC belongs to work or school
Ask your organization’s IT department before changing encryption. Organization policies may control BitLocker, and recovery keys for managed devices are typically backed up and managed by the organization. A personal account or backup location may not contain the key you need.

If Windows asks for a recovery key
Use the key ID shown on the recovery screen to identify the matching 48-digit key. Check the relevant Microsoft account or work/school account, or the backup location used when encryption was set up. If this is a managed PC, contact IT. Microsoft warns that if the key cannot be found and the change that triggered recovery cannot be undone, resetting the device may be necessary; resetting removes files. Back up important data before recovery actions that could erase it.
When BitLocker is enabled, the recovery key is required for most options in WinRE. Microsoft describes available recovery routes in its Windows recovery options guidance.

What changes when encryption is off?
Device Encryption helps protect personal information stored on the drive. Turning it off removes that encryption layer, so consider whether the troubleshooting or compatibility reason for disabling it outweighs the reduced protection for data stored on the device.
