The result estimates the equivalent amount using the CPI series and periods you choose; Excel performs the calculation, while the CPI observations must come from a published source.
How the CPI calculation works
The formula for converting an amount from one period into another is:
Target-period equivalent = starting amount × (target-period CPI ÷ starting-period CPI)
For the reverse conversion—expressing a current nominal amount in earlier-period dollars—reverse the index ratio: multiply by the earlier-period CPI divided by the current-period CPI. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) describes using CPI index ratios for equivalent dollar amounts and constant-dollar calculations in its Math Calculations to Better Utilize CPI Data.

Use observations from the same CPI series, geography, population, and period convention for both sides of the ratio. A monthly index should be compared with another monthly index; an annual average should be compared with another annual average.
Choose the CPI series and periods
Select a population and series
For a broad U.S. consumer comparison, CPI-U is the headline series most often reported by national media. CPI-W is often used in wage-escalation agreements. Choose the series that fits the question, then use it consistently for both periods. The BLS explains the scope and limitations of the CPI in its Consumer Price Index Frequently Asked Questions.

Choose monthly or annual data
Monthly observations let you compare specific months, which is useful when the question is about a particular date or season. Annual averages provide a year-level comparison. These conventions answer different questions, so don’t mix a monthly observation on one side with an annual average on the other. The BLS explains CPI calculation and index data in its Handbook of Methods: CPI Calculation.
Understand what the result represents
The BLS describes CPI as measuring inflation experienced through consumers’ day-to-day living expenses. It represents price change for a broad consumer basket, not a personalized inflation rate for every household or product. Its consumption scope excludes income and Social Security taxes and investment assets, and individual spending patterns can differ from the average basket.

Build the calculator worksheet
1. Set up inputs and CPI data
Create clearly labeled input cells for Starting amount, Starting period, and Target period. If the calculator uses monthly CPI, ask for both month and year for each period. Below or on a separate sheet, store CPI observations in a table with columns such as Period, Series, and Index. Identify the geography and whether the observations are monthly or annual averages. Record the data source and the date you refreshed the table.
2. Retrieve the two index values
Look up the index corresponding to each selected period in the CPI table. Use exact matching so a missing period is not silently replaced by a nearby observation. For example, a missing or invalid lookup should display a clear message such as “CPI period not found” rather than produce a misleading result. A historical Excel example from HowtoExcel.net uses INDEX/MATCH lookups to retrieve index values; the method and example are shown in its inflation calculator tutorial.

3. Calculate and format the result
Once the starting and target indexes are available, use this formula, substituting the appropriate worksheet cell references:
=StartingAmount*(TargetIndex/StartingIndex)
Format the result as currency with sensible decimal places. Label it as a CPI-based estimate and display the periods and CPI series used so the result can be interpreted.

Check the formula with examples
Historical amount converted to a later year
HowtoExcel.net’s tutorial gives an example of $100 in 1913 converted to 2022 dollars using CPI index values of 9.88 and 286.75. Applying the ratio gives $100 × (286.75 ÷ 9.88), or $2,901.40. These are the tutorial’s cited historical example values, not current CPI observations.
Nominal income expressed in earlier-period dollars
The BLS provides a different-direction example using CPI-U, U.S. city average, all items: the December 2024 index was 315.605 and the December 2025 index was 324.054. The relative was 1.027, and the BLS calculated that a nominal $50,000 amount corresponds to $48,696.36 in its real-income calculation. This illustrates converting nominal income into earlier-period dollars; it is not a universal price quote. See the BLS pages on Income and the CPI and its CPI frequently asked questions.
Maintain and interpret the calculator
- Excel applies the index ratio; it does not calculate the official CPI itself.
- Keep the selected series, population, geography, and time basis consistent across both observations.
- Show the periods, series, source, and data refresh date with the result so users can assess what it means.
- Refresh the CPI table when new observations are available. The BLS publishes its own CPI Inflation Calculator and makes monthly CPI data available through its database; a manually maintained workbook should make clear which observations it contains.
- Treat the output as an estimate based on a representative basket, not a guarantee of what a particular household spent or what one product cost.
For example, in its CPI math guidance the BLS compares annual-average indexes of 232.957 for 2013 and 236.736 for 2014; the ratio corresponds to purchasing power of about 98.4 percent. That is an index-based comparison, not a claim about every household’s experience.
