In Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Language & region. In Windows 10, open Settings > Time & language > Language. From there, you can change the Windows display language, add a keyboard layout, or set preferred languages for apps and websites. These are separate settings: changing a keyboard layout does not change the language of the Windows interface.
What “language” means in Windows
Windows has separate controls for the language shown in its interface, the keyboard mapping used when you type, and the language preference used by supported apps and websites. Changing one does not automatically set the others the way you may expect.
- Windows display language: The language used for parts of the Windows interface, including Settings and File Explorer.
- Keyboard layout: The mapping between keys and the characters they produce. You can add and switch layouts independently of the display language.
- Preferred languages: The ordered list that Microsoft Store apps and websites use to choose a supported language. Its first language can differ from the Windows display language.
Microsoft explains that changing the keyboard layout changes only the layout, not the Windows display language. See Microsoft’s Windows language and keyboard settings guidance.
Change the Windows display language
Install the language before selecting it as the display language. Adding a language pack may require an internet connection. Save your work and close open apps before signing out to apply the change.

Windows 11
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Under Preferred languages, select Add a language if the language you want is not installed.
- Search for and select the language, then choose Next. Select Language pack and any other optional features you want. If offered and intended, select Set as my Windows display language, then choose Install.
- Once installed, select the language from the Windows display language menu.
- When prompted, sign out and sign back in to apply the change.
Windows 10
- Open Start > Settings > Time & language > Language.
- Under Preferred language, select Add a language, choose the language, then select Next.
- Select Install language pack and any optional features you want. If offered and intended, select Set as my Windows display language, then choose Install.
- Choose the installed language from the Windows display language menu.
- Save your work, sign out, and sign back in to apply the change.
For Windows 10, adding a language pack requires administrator access. Some single-language editions do not allow another display language; Windows may show a message such as “Only one language pack allowed” or say that the license supports only one display language. Microsoft’s language-pack guidance describes these restrictions.
Add a keyboard layout
Adding a keyboard layout does not require changing the display language. Check the existing layouts first to avoid adding a duplicate.

Windows 11
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language & region.
- Select the ellipsis beside the relevant language, then choose Language options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard and choose the layout.
Windows 10
- Open Settings > Time & language > Language.
- Select the relevant preferred language, then choose Options.
- Under Keyboards, select Add a keyboard and choose the layout.
A full language pack is not always needed just to add a keyboard layout. If the layout you want is not listed under the current language, check the language entry that matches the layout; you may need to install that language.
Switch between installed keyboard layouts
Select the input-language icon in the taskbar and choose the layout you want. Alternatively, press Windows key + Space to cycle through installed layouts. If the shortcut does nothing, only one layout may be installed.

Set the preferred language for apps and websites
Microsoft Store apps and websites use the first supported language in your Preferred languages list. In Windows 11, open Settings > Time & language > Language & region; in Windows 10, open Settings > Time & language > Language. Move the language you want to the top of the preferred list. This preference can be different from the Windows display language. Some Windows elements may remain in another fully localized language if the selected display language is not fully localized.
Remove a language or keyboard layout
Remove a language
In Windows 11, open Language & region, select the language’s More menu, and choose Remove. In Windows 10, open Language, select the language, and choose Remove. You must select a different display language before removing the language currently in use as the display language.

Remove a keyboard layout
Open the relevant language’s options and remove the layout under Keyboards. A layout may be associated with a different language entry than you expect, so check both the display language and the language that matches the layout. Windows will not remove the only installed layout for the current display language until you add another layout.

The taskbar input-language icon is enabled by default, but the legacy desktop language bar can hide it. To restore the icon, open Settings > Time & language > Typing > Advanced keyboard settings and clear Use the desktop language bar when it’s available. This restores the taskbar icon and disables the legacy language bar.

Check the keyboard layout at sign-in
Changing the display language may also change the keyboard layout used at the sign-in screen. Before entering your password, check the input-language icon and switch to the expected layout if necessary. If you are unsure which characters are being entered, use the password reveal control to verify them.
Windows 10 support status
Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. After that date, Microsoft no longer provides free Windows Update updates, technical assistance, or security fixes for Windows 10. The PC continues to work; Microsoft recommends moving to Windows 11. See Microsoft’s Windows language-pack and support information.
For Windows 10 version 1803 and later, Microsoft also documents Local Experience Packs, which are obtained through Microsoft Store. The display-language preference can then be selected at Start > Settings > Time & Language > Language. This is an alternative localization path, not a prerequisite for changing a keyboard layout.
