Plug standard 3.5 mm headphones into the computer’s headphone or audio-out jack, then select them as the sound output in your system settings. If the computer has no 3.5 mm jack, a compatible USB-C-to-3.5 mm audio adapter may work. A headset microphone may need a separate connection and input selection.
1. Check the plug and computer ports
Most conventional wired headphones use a 3.5 mm plug. Look for a matching port marked with a headphone icon or labeled “headphone” or “audio out.” Apple describes the headphone/audio-out port on Macs that have one as a connection for standard 3.5 mm plugs; port availability and capabilities vary by model. See Apple’s Mac headphone guidance and Apple’s guide to Mac ports.
On a desktop, there may be separate headphone and microphone jacks. Use the port markings or the computer’s manual to identify the output. Some systems use green for audio output and pink for microphone input, but colors are not universal, so check labels rather than relying on color alone. Microsoft’s Windows sound guidance notes that jack labels and layouts can vary.
2. Connect the headphones
When the computer has a 3.5 mm headphone jack
- Insert the headphone plug fully into the jack marked with a headphone symbol or “headphone/audio out.”
- If the computer has several similar jacks, check the labels or its manual to make sure you have chosen an output rather than a microphone input.

When the computer has USB-C but no headphone jack
A USB-C-to-3.5 mm audio adapter can connect 3.5 mm headphones to some computers. Apple documents its adapter for connecting 3.5 mm headphones and other audio devices to USB-C; Microsoft documents the equivalent setup for supported Surface devices. Check the documentation for your exact computer and adapter before relying on this option: the cited instructions do not establish that every USB-C port supports audio or that every adapter works with every computer.
- Connect the 3.5 mm headphone plug to the adapter.
- Connect the adapter to the computer’s USB-C port.
- Continue to the system sound settings and select the resulting audio device if it is not selected automatically.
See Apple’s USB-C-to-3.5-mm adapter information and Microsoft’s Surface USB-C audio adapter instructions.

3. Select the headphones as the sound output
If audio still comes from the computer’s speakers, choose the headphones or the associated audio device in system sound settings. In Windows 10 and Windows 11, open Start > Settings > System > Sound, then select the intended device under Output. Check that the volume is raised and mute is off. Microsoft also recommends checking the default playback device and temporarily turning off audio enhancements when troubleshooting. See Fix sound or audio problems in Windows and Microsoft’s no-sound troubleshooting steps.

Headphone playback does not confirm that a headset microphone is connected. Some computers provide distinct headphone and microphone jacks; a headset with one combined plug may need a setup compatible with the computer’s ports. Check the computer and headset documentation for the connector or splitter requirements.

5. Troubleshoot if there is no sound
- Reseat the plug. Remove it and insert it fully again. Confirm that it is in an audio-output jack, not a microphone input.
- Choose the right output. In Windows, return to Start > Settings > System > Sound and select the headphones or associated audio device under Output.
- Check volume and mute. Raise the system volume and confirm that sound is not muted.
- Test the headphones elsewhere. If you have another known-compatible audio source, try the headphones there to help distinguish a headphone issue from a computer setting or port issue.
- Check enhancements and detection. If the device appears but audio is distorted or absent, temporarily turn off audio enhancements. If it does not appear, check device detection and any model-specific driver guidance from the computer maker. Microsoft notes that some Surface devices may not immediately detect an accessory connected to the 3.5 mm jack; see Surface sound and accessory troubleshooting.
