To remove an old Snap revision, find its disabled entry with snap list --all, then remove that exact revision with sudo snap remove <snap-name> --revision=<revision-number>. If space is still tight, check Snap data snapshots separately with snap saved: those are recovery copies, not installed versions, and they require a different cleanup command.

Know what is using the space

Snap keeps more than one kind of data. Installed revisions are stored under /var/lib/snapd/snaps; data snapshots are stored under /var/lib/snapd/snapshots/. Snap-specific user and system data can also live under /home/<username>/snap/<snap-name>/ and /var/snap/<snap-name>/. Canonical documents these managed locations in its Snap data locations guide.

Use Snap commands to inspect and remove revisions or snapshots. Do not manually delete files from Snap-managed directories: the cache, for example, is used to reduce downloads and speed up refreshes, and deleting managed files directly can leave Snap’s bookkeeping inconsistent.

Remove an inactive Snap revision

  1. List all installed revisions:

    snap list --all

If your system requires elevated privileges to list them, run sudo snap list --all.

  2. Find the row for the snap you want to clean up. An older, inactive revision is typically marked disabled in the Notes column. Record the exact snap name and revision number; do not select an active revision just because its number looks older.

  3. Remove only that revision, substituting the values from the listing:

    sudo snap remove <snap-name> --revision=<revision-number>

This revision-specific form removes the selected revision, rather than uninstalling the snap itself. See Canonical’s guide to managing Snap revisions.

Check Snap data snapshots separately

Removing an installed revision is not the same as deleting a snapshot. Snap data snapshots preserve app, system, and configuration data for restoration and can use additional disk space.

  1. List saved snapshots and review their Size and Notes columns:

    snap saved

Entries marked auto are automatic snapshots.

  2. Confirm that you no longer need a snapshot set’s restore data, then delete it by its set ID:

    sudo snap forget <set-id>

Forgetting a snapshot deletes it locally and cannot be undone. Canonical’s data snapshots guide documents the command and automatic snapshot behavior.

Change how many revisions future refreshes keep

The refresh.retain setting controls how many revisions Snap keeps after a future refresh; changing it is not an immediate cleanup command. Canonical documents a range of two to twenty revisions. The documented default is two on classic Ubuntu and three on Ubuntu Core.

Control automatic snapshots created by removals

Outside Ubuntu Core, automatic snapshots are generally retained for 31 days. The separate snapshots.automatic.retention setting controls future automatic snapshot retention. Setting it to no disables automatic snapshots created by subsequent snap removals, which also means losing that automatic recovery copy. Changing the setting does not delete snapshot sets already on disk; inspect those with snap saved and remove unwanted sets individually.

Ubuntu Core differs: automatic snapshots are disabled by default. Defaults and behavior can vary by system or snapd version, so consult the applicable Snap documentation for your device.

Uninstalling a snap without making a new snapshot

If your goal is to uninstall an entire snap and you deliberately do not want a recovery snapshot created during removal, use:

sudo snap remove <snap-name> --purge

This skips creating a new removal snapshot; it does not delete older snapshots. Review existing sets separately before using snap forget. Because purge removes a potential recovery path for the data associated with the snap, use it only when that trade-off is acceptable. Canonical explains the option in its Snap removal guide.
